i got my class rank today, and unfortunately am in 8.9% of my graduating class. i know automatic is 8% but i'm wondering if i still have a chance? this is my top choice school.

my sat score was 1850 (should i retake it? i know it's a bit low)
i'm involved in cheerleading, spanish club, HOSA, National Honor Society, and I was the first ever junior mentor in my school's Path the Success Mentoring Program. I also have volunteered at a hospital for a couple of summers and do volunteer work through nhs.

Of course you have a chance, but I would retake the SAT if you have time. Why did you get your rank so late in the game? It should have been on your Spring 2012 report card. (UT uses rank through quarter 6…Spring 2012) Telling you this now is a shame because you would have had more opportunites to take the SAT or ACT had you know back in May.

our ranks are not included on our report card unfortunately. and yeah, my rank includes my spring 2012 semester. i think part of the problem is the size of our class/school (pretty huge, 892 people in my class so far although the number is projected to go up)

i have heard of people being admitted that were 14% or 10% but they seemed to have many leadership roles and more extracurriculars than me. i am just worried that i do not have enough things to make me stand out. and i’m also wondering if rank really matters if you’re not automatically accepted. does a 9% have a step up against a 14%?

mandler, good work on achieving top 8.9%! That is awesome. The best person to guide you re: what that rank means for you is your high school college counselor. It’s likely your school is a strong UT feeder, and your counselor will have data from past years and advice about how to maximize your changes of acceptance. In addition to retaking the SAT if you have time to do some targeted prep on the types of questions that gave you the most trouble last time, be sure to take full advantage of the expanded resume (follow all of the links to helpful tips and examples: [Expanded Resumes | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/freshmen/admission/resume)), get some strong rec letters (perhaps one from a teacher and another from the sponsor of Path to Success?) and knock it out of the park on your essays!

Your chances are not ruined - Keep fighting for grades and leadership positions. It will also matter which school you are applying. You may also want to either retake the SAT or take the ACT. My kiddo did OK on the SAT, but knocked it out of the park on the ACT. Best score is all that counts. The biggest factors are going to be grades, scores, difficulty of courses and the Essays.
