Are my chances that BAD?

I am South Asian(Indian). I live in Houston, Texas. I wasn't getting a lot of responses in the "What are my chances Forum"?

G.P.A.- 3.8/4.0 (Unweighted) 93.8/100 (weighted)
Class Rank- Anywhere from TOP 15 PERCENT To TOP 19 PERCENT (I don't know for sure)------I KNOW THIS IS BAD...HOW MUCH OF A FACTOR Do YOU GUYS THINK IT IS? Look at my grades below and tell me if they are good enough.....My counselor did say in her rec, that at surrounding schools I would have been top 10 percent.....Do you guys think schools will see my rank, and my gpa, with my sat score and assume my school is compeitive, or will it hurt me a lot?

Yeah, you didn't take SAT Subject tests!

I think your chances are pretty good......I don't pretend to be an expert though.
Have you showed a lot of interest in the school?

I don't think your rank will hurt you that much. You have some rigorous courses and perhaps overall you have a decent chance.

But I have to ask you, how did you get a B in PE?

Without being in the top 10% of your class you will have a very tough time getting in. The RD pool is very competitive. Is it possible that at the end of the 1st semester your class rank will improve?

About 90% of incoming freshmen are in the top 10% of their class at WashU. That being said, it is very tough to get in if you don't meet that threshold. If I recall correctly, you stated that you were flat out rejected from Rice ED in another thread. Although acceptance at WashU is certainly possible, I would have thought that you would have a better chance at Rice ED than WashU in the very competitive RD pool.

The unfortunate truth is that your class rank is a big detriment to your application as whole. However, you do seem to have taken a very rigorous courseload throughout your high-school career and WashU definitely will recognize that. Also, your grades look pretty good, especially in your AP classes. I'm actually somewhat surprised that you aren't ranked higher than you are with grades like that (your school must be pretty competitive).

So overall, it will be very tough for you. Your SAT I scores are good, with the 1470 beign slightly above the median score (1450 I think?) for WashU students. ECs look good. I like the karate black-belt. That's cool. Class rank is all that's holding you back, but hopefully WashU will recognize that you attend a competitive high-school and will cut you a bit of slack. Anyway, good luck and I hope you get in!

Btw, like the poster above asked, how in the world did you get a B in PE?

lol thanks for the input guys..... lots of useful analysis, thanks.....

I can't run a mile in 8 minutes...the fastest i can run it in is 9 minutes...so the coach gave me a b.... ROFL...
^^Messed up thing is that p.e. counts for class rank and gpa, lol

My rank won't go up, sophmore year i had a 3.7 and I was ranked in the top 11 percent.....Junior year I had a 3.8 and I was ranked in the top 15-19 percent....my gpa went up, but my rank fell a lot....

woo the school like its your unrequited lover.

psh, I can run the mile in 5:30 minutes and I'm a girl!

haha. Just kidding, that's actually kind of sad (that it affected GPA and rank like that).

Rank matters, but it isn't considered in isolation. That is, if with your stats you are towards the lower end of the top 20%, it is obviously more competitive than the high schools many other applicants are coming from. Since your academic profile is otherwise fine, I see no reason why this would exclude you from being a strong applicant. Sure, it doesn't help, but you ought not listen to those who make a big deal about it.

well it is kind of a big deal, WashU themselves say rank is very important in the admissions process. I'm not ruling you out, just stating that the competition is tough. Best of luck though, hope the holistic approach to your application helps you.

gprime - I agree that the OP is a strong applicant. But knowing that 90% of WashU students are ranked in the top 10% of their class (regardless of how competitive the high-school), it is difficult to say that this person has a good chance.

I second the poster above me. Certainly we can't rule out the OP, but the competition in the RD pool is very tough, and rank is considered very important in the admissions process. Again, best of luck.

Fairly intersting discussion about how blind statistics are very misleading...

Thanks for the inputs....

I agree that my chances are bad....My sat scores aren't high, and I am not in the top 10 percent...A 17 percent acceptance rate, and 10 percent of kids not in the top 10 percent, combined with 25-30 percent of the kids being athletes, urms, or legacies means I have virtually no shot....

umm, the link i showed you explains how you definitley have more than "virtually no shot"

come on ftx 2009, you have a decent shot. Keep your head up high and just hope for the best.
