What schools are we talking here?

You’ll want to get your SAT I to a 2100+.

im going to apply to hyp just for the heck of it
i like columbia or georgetown

please help!!

Define “top school”. Top 10? Top 25? Top Business? Top Overall? Top International Affairs?

top overall. top 10-15
here’s my list of school:
hyp
georgetown
columbia
uchicago

Try to bring up that SAT score to 2100+. Your GPA is great and you have good ECs. It certainly doesn’t hurt that you are African-American.

2100? Any tips?
My weakest subject on the SAT is usually math.
I got a 1950 altogether the first time-- with a 610 in math
Critical Reading is a bit challenging too (I over-analyze things)

Ur sat is too low, sorry

If you can get your SAT up to a 2100 or 2200, I think your chances would improve tremendously. Tips: Practice. The Math is probably the easiest section to approve on, since the topics stay pretty much the same. I’d buy a review book - the College Board Official Review Book would probably help a lot.

Good luck! :)

@pqrrrqjjjqq – there was a girl in my school with a 1850 sat score–and she got into columbia university ed with a full-ride this year. my ec are far stronger than hers were, and our gpas are the same. So anything is possible.

@livelovelaugh (i have a huge poster in my room with those words :P)-- thanks. I will practice practice practice. It is possible for me to go up…its not not like Im starting out with a 1400 or something. a 1950 is pretty darn close to a high score.

how much does being an urm actually help if your scores arent all that perfect?

I’m not sure exactly how that person you mentioned with the 1850 got in, I suppose there are some rare cases of a person with far too low stats getting in, but generally your scores are not enough. A 1950 is not at all close to an Ivy caliber score. If you keep practicing and can bring it up 300+ points you’ll have a chance, but a 4.0 from a poor school doesn’t mean much. Just do your best, that’s the only thing that can ever improve your chances.

You see I do not nec. want Ivy. I want NYU, Georgetown, etc.

NYC is a little more lenient but still a reach for you, Georgetown is on the same level as an Ivy in this case.

first you should try and find a school that matches what you actually want just a top name school wont actually make you happy and you wont do well if you dont know it will be a good fit…finding a good fit always makes your interviews and essays more sincere and interesting…big vs. small, urban vs. cornfields…

I would try to find a school in those ranks that looks at the students more holistically and doesnt simply plug the number…i dont think your numbers are going to get you in but your ecs and a good recc could fill the gap.

No. Your SAT score needs to improve. If you raise improve that, you have much better chances. Your schedule seems good, but I would try to get in another EC or two if you can.

I personally don’t think being an URM would help all that much, but I may be wrong. Even if you COULD get in, the caliber of the other students that got in without a hook can easily overwhelm you. To maximize your chances, improve that SAT score and pour every extra hour you have into community service or another extracurricular.

for hyp at least a 2350, or no shot at all. 1950 isn’t even close to at least the 2250 you need to apply to these schools, otherwise ur app might simply be shredded… practice, practice, practice!

“Just for the heck of it” is a pretty stupid way to waste an application fee–or, if you have a fee waiver, to abuse that system. Either get your SAT up to the level expected for your schools, or tailor your list around much less selective schools. Your URM status means you can probably aim for the 25% as far as SAT scores go, but without something truly compelling about you, even being a URM can’t overcome your scores.
