Are my classes / work load sufficient?

I'm an incomming freshman with Bio Sci as my major. I have a couple questions about the classes I am taking this fall.

First of all I'm taking: Bio Sci 2A, Bio Sci 93, Writing 39B, and Chem 1A, totaling 13 units.

I'm wondering whether or not these classes are sufficient, because a couple of my friends have at least 16 units total.
This brings me to my next question, being whether taking the Humcore or Writing series is a better idea. I asked my counselors and they simply told me to take Writing 39B if I didn't enjoy reading books daily and writing essays on them.

I'm also a little worried if just taking these classes would hurt me in the long run. Will this make my "resume" less appealing compared to others taking the humcore, ect. Or is it all about the number of credits.

Thank you for your time. :)

arn’t you taking 15 units?

Are you forgetting the chem lab?

If your taking 15 then you are doing fine.

And in terms of resume, what you want to be doing is research at the university.

There is no chem lab for fall quarter. What about math? You can always sign up for more units, and drop if its too harsh on you.

13 units is perfectly fine, I had the same amount my fall quarter. It’s better to ease yourself into the quarter system. As in regards to either HumCore or 39b, I’d suggest 39b. I’ve had friends in HumCore and they totally hated it; there’s a reason it’s 6 units. 39b can be way easy too if you get a good professor.

Art is Melodic: Nope, only 13, according to what the register page tells me. And, Chem Lab? Is it required to take in fall?
Also, are there any programs I can join in order to start doing research, esp. with a professor?

junshik: Thank you for clearing that up. If I do add math, then decide to drop it later in the year, will it make more complications to my schedule or put a smudge on my records?
I remember one of my counselors telling me a certain time fram that I can drop a class in, and if I do it later than that, something bad will happen?

tylerliu: Ah alright. It’s just a wierd feeling only taking about half the classes I would usually take back in high school. How would you say your work load was? Also, with taking 13 units for the fall quarter, when or how many breadth classes did you take the following quarters?

Sorry for all the questions. ^^;

I think we start having chem labs in the winter. Yeah, I suggest you drop the class during the time frame, otherwise you’ll have W for withdrawal in your record, which I think should be avoided at all costs.

I took 12 units my first quarter(Bio + Chem + 39B)
18 units 2nd quarter (Bio + Chem + Lab + 39C + Antho)
17 units 3rd quarter (Chem + Lab + History + Psych + Research + 194S)

It is definitely normal to take a minimal amount of units the first quarter. (my first quarter was also my worst grade wise.)

You won’t be able to do to do Bio 199 research until you finish 194S(1 unit P/NP Safety and Ethics Courses) so if you want to do research right off the bat in Freshman year you will need to take that.
I started with Epidemiology 199 so I didn’t have to have 194S completed before I started. Something like this is also an option depending on what type of research you are interested in.

Humanties Core would not make your academic success look any worse than 39C or B would. It’s just how you want to get the requirement done.

junshik: Can’t wait! Alright. Which math do I need to take if I passed the AP Calc AB test?

tatertots: Ah, okay. Would you recommend taking it in the fall or later in the year? I already have a couple of intrests for research, but I’m not really sure if they correlate with my major, haha. Also do you think adding math to my schedule would be too much?

asimmons: Thank you, I feel much better now. :)

If you want to take 194S now, you could get it over with, though most people wait till spring of freshman year or fall of sophomore. It is not very hard, everything is online and you have 1 final you have to get an 80% on to pass.
If you stayed focused, or have taken calculus before, it PROBABLY wouldn’t be too much. But it could be if you take advantage of the freedom in college allows you and party or go out a lot.
