I am sophomore in high school. I’m not great at anything and don’t have many ECs.
-Soon to be Eagle Scout (I plan to reach Eagle this summer)
-President of Newspaper Club (currently our club does nothing, but I’m working towards recruiting new members and doing more work)
-Interact Club member (I might run for office next year)
-Beginner SwimClub (I’m going to try out for the high school team junior year. Though I will compete, I definitely won’t win region or anything)
-I might do a volunteer program abroad next summer in Latin America
-I plan to take a gap year to Latin America before college
I feel like my ECs are terrible. I put in a lot of effort into swimming, but I’m never going to get any awards for it. I want to write fiction a lot more, so I might attend a summer program and try some contests in the future. What do you think? Thank you in advance!
I also attended the RYLA leadership camp, one of the greatest experiences of my life.
I also might join orchestra if they bring it to my high school next year. I played viola all throughout middle school, but my high school doesn’t have an orchestra right now.
I think that these are solid ECs. When I was applying to colleges, I had even fewer than you (mainly teaching kids abd color guard, and a bunch of small, random things), and I had the same fears as you (and was very surprised that I got into a Top 20 university). But you really do have good variety, and it’s not about doing things that sound impressive. It’s about doing things that you love, and you can show that with commitment (long-term participation) and leadership. But really, focus less on doing more things and invest more in the things you’re already doing.
Congratulations on your acceptance!!! Thank you for commenting!!! I feel a lot better!
These ECs are good but you still have to improve the quality of these activities. In a year, I think you will make these look cool. And remember it doesn’t matter how much activity do you do. Quality is a what matters to colleges. They won’t to see you devoted to something. A couple of very good activities will do the job
