I’m totally not a sports person so I’ve got none of that. I’m part of National Honors Society (junior and senior year). I’ve been leader of the school theater club for all 4 years of high school. I created a club and am co-president of it. I have been in student council for all of high school (treasurer all 4 years). Was in the school orchestra for the first 2 years of high school. Aside from these EC’s I have done A LOT of volunteering (200+ hours). I’m not sure if these are any good and am worrying about the fact that I haven’t done sports (too late now btw). I’m going into my senior year in the fall and will be applying to colleges soon. Thanks for the help in advance!
No, you don’t have to be in sports to be considered as having a a strong EC load. It’s just one of the more recognizable ECs because one has to dedicate many hours in order to play on a varsity team and then become captain of such team (in most cases). You have commitment in a few ECs which is great also! I say colleges would rather see strong commitment to 2 or 3 activites as opposed to a laundry list of shallow ECs like 1year of JV basketball, 1 year cooking club, 1 year water polo etc. Nobody can judge whether your ECs are truly weak because we have no idea how much time you dedicate, what your responsibility is, how much influence you have etc.
Your ECs look great, especially since you demonstrate several leadership positions. Don’t worry about not being an athlete… not everyone needs to be!
Our ecs are very similar except instead of the club and theater i was on two sports teams and I’m honestly amazed I found time to breathe so I can’t imagine someone seeing our ec’s as ‘weak’
I would say you have strong at face value but if you look deeper they are not actually too good. You co founded a club, but were not the actual president. Why wouldn’t colleges accept the other guy since he has apparently more leadership. Also, theater club leader and student council treasurer for ALL FOUR YEARS shows that it is not competitive at all and probably had no real other opponents in the election to be elected as a freshman
Are your ECs weak? Well that depends entirely upon what your target is. If your target is Harvard or Stanford then the ECs yiu listed above are fairly standard.
But if you are targeting less selective schools then the list looks fine.
