...are my grades good enough?

Here are some things to take in mind:

: Asian female
: School NEVER sends anyone to MIT...or other top colleges
: top 1%
: nothing special...no legacy or first generation college-goer...
: a few pretty good leaderships (a couple captaincies and presidents), but no big awards. some state and regional science and math stuff...and then some violin awards and others...bio and chem olympiad semifinalist
: i always took the hardest classes possible?
: perfect standarized test scores

:( i'm a bit discouraged because nobody ever goes to MIT from my school, and im not the BEST of my class, in terms of grades, but does that matter?

...YES. They are more than good enough. Calm down, don't worry.

Oh good lord. I'm the first kid from my school to go to MIT, and your grades are right around mine. You're fine. Breathe.

:) Your grades are good enough, especially in that they can't get much better!

lol, thanks guys! sorry to sound like a total loser, but would there be as big of a difference if i had gotten all As instead? especiallly since i dont have any amazing awards like some people do here.. lol

I'm not in the running for valedictorian, but I was accepted. One of the would-be valedictorians was rejected. It takes more than perfect grades to get in :P

^^ Exactly. I just got in this past weekend, and I did not by any means have perfect grades or perfect test scores. I think those numbers are just used as qualifiers. The rest is really up to how well you communicate yourself through what you do outside of class and through your essays.

Um, in MY version of reality, you DID get all As.

Please relax.

okay..i hope i am interesting enough in my ECs and other stuff..

guys, when u give out grades like A,A- and stuff... are those grades, the grades of the final exams... as in the end of year exams in all subjects??
(coz i have some Bs in my mid-term exams!! Finals always turn out be gr8)
So Is that fine?

Is there any elligibity test for unis like MIT in terms of highschool grades? You know just to check if you are qualified 'to apply' (I am sure its a very self-selecting applicant pool)? Since not everyone can ask their counsellor about these things...for there is no data of past students who took off to MIT.

Ty.

no, there is no elligibility test..

Anyone can apply.

And for my school, the grades that are sent off to colleges is the FINAL grade. Some schools do semester grades but ours is final only. If your final grades are good, then you're probably fine.

^^ Then why are you worried about your grades if you know MIT will only see your As?

Your grades are fantastic. Many, myself included, got in with a couple Bs.
However, what is key is your test scores and whether the corroborate your grades. If not, MIT will suspect grade inflation, which tends to make your school appear weak.

hm, well I took 5 SATIIs and SATs and they were all 800s.

Well i was worried that I had too many A-s, which MIT will see. The grades that I posted are the grades that colleges will see.

grade inflation? happens?? :X!!

Relax. I didn't get in just because of my grades, and neither will you. Find something you love and go for it - everything else will take care of itself. A grade is just a letter on a page, and as long as you prove that you can handle the work at MIT (and it sounds like you already have), you're absolutely fine. Good luck!

my friend had 11 Bs and got in...

I got a 2050 on my SAT1 (630-cr,750-math,670-writing) and 800s in SATII’s in phy, chem and math2. Because my SAT1 was bad I also took the toefl iBT and got 106. I am an Indian(male) and also have straight A’s in class from class 9 in one of the best schools in India.I topped my class for 3 years in a row.
Besides I have internships in 2 organisations(pretty rare for indian), I play keyboard, have 2 international awards and am a state level athlete.I have taken part in all clubs in school, and also did research projects in summer on soil conductivity.I have 60-80 hours on community service and hope to qualify 2 olympiads this year too.I am VERY passionate abt going to MIT.Sadly international students can only apply RD. Over the past 4 years only 1 person got in to MIT from my school. and that worries me a lot.
I am also applying to stanford, caltech and CMU,UIUC.

For me the main problem in EC’s was because I am also focussing on IITs also(like other indian kids).
Do i stand a realistic chance, or a waste of a dream.
Guys can you help out ??

Also I forgot to add that I have made biofuels, telescopes(physics teacher is proud of that), making an iOS app(Apple does not have radio, indians need RADIO) and have done work in rural India on electricity and clean energy.
