Are my jr. year classes competitive enough for engineering?

Hello everyone, I’m preparing for my jr. year and I finished registering for my classes. I know tons of other kids have asked this already, but are my classes competitive enough for E school (or a good college in general)?

*AP Chem
*AP USH
*AP Lit
*AP Gov
*Pre-calc

I could’ve take calc AB however I wanted to take other classes instead. My math teacher said I can take BC my sr. year since I am really good at math. Will not taking AB my jr year really bite me when I apply for E school?

Any comments, or advice will be appreciated.

Have you taken precalc already? I know usually you do precalc before calc AB, and seeing as how you want to do engineering I would say taking precalc twice (if this is what you are planning on doing) wouldn’t be worth it. If you can go to AB, then do AB! If this is your first time taking precalc (which I assume it is), then no this will not hurt you. If this is your first time taking precalc and you will go to calc bc after, that is very very impressive. best of luck!

I have not take pre-calc yet. I’m still in Alg 2. However, I’m one of those kids who watch khan academy math videos all weekend long. When I took a placement test for calculus I did very well. However, the math teacher said I could take calc AB, but she did not recommend it since she claims her class will kill my GPA… I barely have a 4.0. If I get 1 A- my GPA will plummet. Also, she is not a very easy teacher. I took her advice with regards to skipping AB, and she told me I can do BC my sr year with her.

In all honesty, I don’t feel comfortable taking AB with her. This is why I happily took her offer. Although, I want to do ChemE in college badly. Should I just buckle down and take it?

I mean BC will have all the material from AB as well, so it shouldn’t hurt to take precalc for this year. However, if AB is hard w/ her, I would imagine BC would be challenging as well. I think it would be helpful to get that precalc background before jumping into calculus AB (not saying you can’t do it though). remember though, I’m pretty sure colleges will recommend you take calculus again at the university level even after taking calc AB or BC in high school (even if you get a 5 on the exam, just so you can be prepared for the higher level courses in engineering, (this is what UF told me when i asked them)). so… should you take calc AB? i say stick with precalc if you really want to keep that 4.0. plus i heard after taking precalc calc AB is easier to people because you’ve already seen these concepts before (that’s what my precalc teacher told me… in precalc now.) i say stick with precalc, however you can do AB if you want to though

not taking AB won’t really hurt you imo. I guess it all depends on what schools you are looking to apply to as well.
