I am an international student so please keep that in mind when reading the scores, but I got a 750 in Math,a 690 in Critical Reading and a 480 in Writing. I know its horrible but is writing really worth repeating the SAT for? I am planning to study something scientific in University and most probably applying to scientific universities,so how important will writing be?

Bump, I guess

I am a student from London and on my second attempt got:

Reading:640
Maths: 730
Writing: 760

Based purely on an academic decision, are these scores good enough for the ivies?
I always thought that anything above 2100 gets a closer look when the applications are being read. Is this true?

For the first student, some colleges don’t look at the writing score, but others do. For those that do, yours is not great. If you can figure out why you didn’t do so well, you might want to take it again.
For the second student, the problem is the CR score–that’s not very high for the Ivies. It’s not impossible, but it would be at the low end of the range for those schools.

For Badwan - It is still a really good idea to bump the writing up; writing is an important skill especially in sciences, where you’ll need to be able to record and report any discoveries and studies thoroughly.
For adm531, although these are relatively high scores, you might want to beef up all your scores anyway. Although a good threshold for the ivies is the-at-least-2100 rule, the higher the better, especially for international students.

Yeah I kind of figured I need to retake it. My dream school is MIT, do you think it will hurt my chances too greatly?

Yes — MIT wants excellence in all areas of SAT. They don’t lower the bar for anyone, not even athletes. This is what a professor told me when I was visiting. You have to do well on your composite score for the SAT, which means beefing up your writing. They want subjects of learning to intertwine with each other to ultimately create a solid foundation of education

Ah well, I guess I’ll try harder its weird though, they don’t mention writing on their Standardized Testing Requirements web page.

Here’s MIT-specific info from 2007:

Percent of Applicants Admitted: 12.5%
Test Scores – 25th / 75th Percentile
SAT Critical Reading: 660 / 760
SAT Math: 720 / 800
SAT Writing: 660 / 750
ACT Composite: 31 / 34
ACT English: 30 / 35
ACT Math: 32 / 35

180 point increase, ah well, I guess I’ll figure something out, at least I am within range for Math and CR

Without a hook, not being near the 75th percentile for any score hurts, especially for an inernational. I’d put some work into CR and math too for MIT.

I actually ended up getting in, I raised writing to 610 though.
