The grades are decent as long as she’s taking the most challenging courses. If there are a bunch of honors courses for 9th graders then that’s not good. I mean, they’re not outstanding but good.

Honestly, colleges look more at the courses and the specific grades than your GPA - what does a GPA of 3.8 mean, for instance? It depends on the school, so that’s not the best way to compare people.

I think they are great; however, I would strongly recommend for her, if she is considering top colleges and even if she isn’t (so she can challenge herself), to take a more difficult courseload next year because as previous people have pointed out, there is a difference between a 4.0 with a difficult courseload and a 4.0 with an easy courseload. Try to take some AP classes and Honors classes if it’s possible at your school.

Clarification about GPA for colleges. HS GPA’s typically are cumulative for grades 9-11. Usually GPA/rank is calculated at the end of 11th grade. This is done so that those values can be used when appications for colleges are submitted in Fall of senior year. Colleges do still care about senior grades though and will most likely ask for a mid-year report and final report in 12th grade.
