I’m applying for business, with an undecided specific major. So overall I realize I have a good SAT score and a lower GPA (compared to “top” students). I have good extra-curriculars and community service.
I attend a competitive high school, with about 800 people in the grade. I know about 3-4 other people applying to Stern if that makes a difference (does it?).
GPA: 3.75 on a 4.0 scale
SAT: 2230 (680 CR, 760 Math, 790 Writing)
SAT II: 790 in Math; Taking Biology in November
ACT: 31 (pretty bad; won’t be submitting this)
APs: Junior year; AP English I, AP US History; Senior year; AP Psychology, AP English II, AP Biology, AP Calc AB
Grades in General: I’m an A/B student, but Math is not my strongest subject, which might be concerning considering I will be majoring in business. Does this put me at a disadvantage?
ECs:
Have over 300+ hours of volunteering done at my church (leader for camp for kids, praise team leader, fundraiser)
Played violin for about 9 years (first-violinist in competitive school orchestra; all-state orchestra; regional orchestra; philharmonic youth orchestra)
Completed all 8 Grades of ABRSM in Piano
Artist
Highest Honor Roll at Kumon for 8 consecutive years
President of Family Career Community Leaders of America club at school; attended two state-wide conferences and won rewards (1st Place Silver; 2nd Place Silver)
Key Club
Tri-M Music Honor Society
National Honor Society
Essays:
Should be pretty good. They are being reviewed by highly knowledgeable people who know everything about the admissions process.
If I’m applying ED1 to Stern, how competitive does that make me?
Oh, I forgot to add that I attended the National Student Leadership Conference, and took the program in Business and Entrepreneurship. I was taught by Steven Rogers (Harvard Business Professor) and was involved in creating a business, running it, holding a press conference, etc.
Does anyone know the average SAT and gpa for Stern students? I have an idea of what it is for the school overall, but I’m assuming Stern stats may be higher?
@blazingthrough Not sure about GPA (I would guess 3.7-8/4 UW). As for SAT, anything over 2200 is competitive. Your ECs are weak. I know that playing Violin for 9 years and being principle is great and all, but you aren’t applying for Tisch for performing arts, so how much do they care? You really need business related ECs to stand out in the Stern applicant pool. NSLC is not respected by colleges, especially competitive programs like Stern. If you learned something great there and wrote about your business experience in your essay - then that’s awesome. Seriously. but if it’s just one line on your app it won’t suddenly make them think you need to have a place in their top-notch business program. Your stats are perfectly on target. If you don’t get in it will be because of your extracurriculars. You still have a solid chance though. Best of luck to you!
@iywang Thanks! I know I’m at a disadvantage because only in the past year did I decide on Business as my area of study. I definitely hope my many hours of community service and my clubs help my ECs seem stronger. Thank you so much! I think you definitely have a solid chance as well. One week left!
average stern freshman stats from last year is 3.9/4.0, 3.76/4.0 and 1460, 1430/1600 Mean and median gpa and sat score I believe. with the number, you look ok. not breaking 700 CR will hurt you a little bit but it’s fine. What was your gpa from 9-11? and whats your nationality?
