I have been lurking around for a while, and this is my first post. I saw the thread “Are online degrees worth anything?” I am a senior in high-school, and I just finished applying to colleges.
I am looking at Open Culture and edX for online certificates, but I’m not sure if they’re worth anything.
I’m not 100% sure, but since a good number of online schools seem to be for-profit schools, which will get you nowhere if you choose to pursue further education. Unless it’s through an established, accredited school and they just so happen to offer online courses then it might be worth it if that is what you are looking for. Be careful looking at those two, if they are for-profit you could end up with a useless certificate and/or more debt than an accredited school.
I am not sure about open culture but edX is a free online course system. those are not for credit. you want to find schools that make you pay around 600 for a class or something.
I haven’t applied to any yet but after what I’ve learned I’ve considered applying if I don’t get into the brick and mortar schools I applied to. I found out some of them do not mention on the transcript that you received an online education. So if you find a respectable brick and mortar school that offers an online education and does not mention that it was on the transcript, it seems it could be a good option.
I’ve contacted several Ivy League and top tier Universities and they all accept Course Era, Udacity, edX, and etc. certificates in a miscellaneous section of the application. Most schools will consider it, but it won’t dramatically give you an advantage over other applicants.
But in reality, it’s not worth any credit to the colleges. You would have to still take the course over even if you did complete it online.
