Texas137 ~ Has your S decided to attend Cal Tech? I'm sure he has options, given his achievements in hs.

Reasonabledad ~ It's btwn Caltech and MIT. He plans a Caltech visit sometime before CPW to help him decide.

it'sallgood,

"CalTech is one of the stingiest with aid when compared to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford and others roughly in their peer group. Seems like CalTech could be a little more generous."

What do you base this on?

"They have a good sized endowment...and they certainly have NOT poured ANY money into the dorms from what I've seen."

That's to be fixed very soon. This year our dining facilities are being renovated. Then, we have money and construction plans for renovating the South Hovses next year (05-06). Since they're historic buildings (and gorgeous in my opinion), they'll be gutted and updated, rather than torn down. There are also plans for rebuilding the North Houses over the two years following (06-08).

Also, could someone explain how to quote a message in the reply? I thought there used to be an option, right below the message, but I can't find it now.

for quotes, use {quote} and the beginning, and {/quote} at the end. But instead of {}brackets, use [] brackets.

alleya, my brother was accepted to all the schools I mentioned, so we had a chance to do a true apples to apples comparison. Don't remember the exact numbers, but my parents said, "What the heck is wrong with CalTech."

by the way, I think the campus is beautiful--one of the best--and truly huge when you think of the small student population. The dorm building are classic in look, but show--especially the interiors--much wear and tear. Glad to hear they are being renovated.

itsallgood, Thanks -- you're right, that probably is the best comparison. I agree that the houses do show a lot of wear and tear. The funny thing is, though, that I haven't really heard much clamor among students for this to be fixed. Most of us are completely content with the houses as is. Maybe it's because we realize that we'll have to be more careful about not damaging new buildings than we have to be with the old. :)

Texas, thanks!

I actually kind of like how the houses (at least the South Hovses) are all beat up... I live in Hell (an alley in Blacker), and it just won't be the same after renovations.

According to my sister (who is a junior at CIT), it is mainly the students who don't want the dorms rebuilt. I could see why considering some of the art on the walls. Pretty amazing stuff...

I personally thought Caltech was quite generous towards me. I was previously considering Berkeley for cost reasons, but Caltech will be cheaper with the financial aid package. Berkeley will almost undoubtedly give me nothing.
