I'll be taking the US History and Biology SAT II's this May. I'm wondering if it's really necessary that I buy the prep books, if I'm being taught the material in class (taking both of those as AP's right now). Would it be smarter to try some released tests, Or should I give the books a try?

My guess would be that books aren’t necessary. However, it would be wise to find some released tests to make sure you know the content that will be covered. Personally, I’m buying prep books for both of the tests I will be taking (Physics and Math), since I’m in introductory physics right now and most likely won’t learn all of the content that would be covered on the test in time. I’m also getting a book for math level 2, since I’m in Calc BC right now and have likely forgotten a lot of the content that will be covered.
