Are some classes excluded from your GPA?

Obviously, the core academics are counted for, but what about classes like band, or media arts? In Canada, universities look only at English plus your next three highest academic grades as a way to factor your GPA. How is it done in America? Is every class counted?

Every class that is not graded pass/fail is counted in your GPA.

Every class except electives, and some electives are included.

I take Senior Concert Band, Senior Stage Band, and Media Arts 11 as electives. I wonder if they count... My school counts them when they give us our final report card. How would I find out?

I've talked to people in admissions from various schools and it seems to vary from college to college. Some take your transcript (which includes everything - all classes from all 4 years of HS) and they take out freshman year. Some take out freshman year and non-academic subjects. Some reweight, some just take the transcript as is. If you call the admissions of any college, they will tell you what they look at and how they work it (though not in detail, of course).

tlaktan-not true, my school does not use grades earned in health and PE in our GPAs

some electives can be as graded as pass/fail. however, you must ask both your teacher and your guidance teacher for their approval. they will understand that academic classes can lower your GPA despite getting an A in the class.

It depends on the college you are applying to. Some (like Stanford) will recalculate your GPA, using only academic classes (no PE or Art), and unweighted scale. Some will use freshman year grades, some will not. Some will just use whatever GPA your school sends in.

Just expect your GPA to be recalculated in the university's own way. I applied to Auburn early (just as a safety) and they gave me a GPA that I didn't even consider my GPA (3.84, in actuality it was 3.741, but I dunno what happened)..
