Are some med schools now doing 2-day interviews?

A family friend shared with me her son’s interview invite. It’s over 2 days. One day of touring/clinical rounds and one day of interviews.

I may be out of the loop because when my son was interviewing back in 2012, interviews were one day events…half day of campus tour, hosted lunch, half day of interviews.

Is this a one-off SOM doing this or is this common? It’s a Texas public med, if that makes a difference.

(I’m not talking about residency interviews which I know are often over 2 days…one evening of hosted dinner and then the next morning are interviews.)

I have a close friend whose daughter just went through the process and three of her interviews were over the course of two days.

@mom2collegekids What you described appears to be similar to UTSW 2 day interview schedule. But note, the first is optional and only second day (Sat.day) is mandatory interview day.
My D did not go for the first day (Friday) due to UG class schedules and it did not affect the outcome of admission.

A minority of medical schools are doing 2 day interviews that seem to structured more like residency interviews—a pre interview dinner with current students the night before and interviews, facility tours and a financial aid info session on the second day.

The pre-interview dinner is “optional”.

UTSW has been doing the 2 day thing for a while. D’s interview in 2015 was structured that way and they did call Friday optional. The pre interview dinner exists at many places but it is always optional and they are just giving people a chance to ask questions in a friendly environment.
I was unhappy to miss the dinner since it said the student could bring someone! However, she had an interview on Friday in Houston and we were driving in rush hour friday evening traffic and didn’t reach in time.
@mom2collegekids - The rounds may be done again on interview day if I am not mistaken. UTSW has some of the best facilities. The hospital is considered one of a kind where the interns get their own rooms if they are working the night. Some of the rooms have glasses that turn opaque so no one can see in and i think student groups get cones of silence (SNL reference) when they are doing group activities.

Rediculous.

MD/PhD interviews back in 2009-2010 were 2-3 days

@momofsenior1
was that a Texas med?

@iwannabe_Brown i can understand MD/PhD interviews, but this was strange for just MD.

I have heard of this before. What I was just hearing was a full day of touring and then a full day of interview. The mom is going to send me a screenshot of the 2 day schedule…she said when she looked it over, both days were jammed full…so not like residency interviews with hosted dinner at night and interviews in the morning. In fact when my son was interviewing for residencies (and he went to 27), they were all the same dinner at night and interviews in morning and he generally was on a flight back home by 1-2pm.

It does seem that the Texas meds that are doing the 2 full days of interviews.

Not Texas. I’ll PM you

D didn’t have any 2 day interviews last year, but she did have 2 or 3 schools who had an informal dinner/social time the night before the interview day. Those events were optional. D went to at least 2 of them and was thankful to not have to spend money on dinner. But there weren’t any interviews with 2 days of activities.

I don’t like the idea of med schools going to a 2 day (daytime) interviews especially if midweek.

I did see a Texas med that has a tour on Friday (daytime) and interviews on Saturday
