Are some of these expenses optional?

This is the breakdown of expenses on our myslice page. I'm assuming everyone's is the same. Are any of these items optional? For example, what is the health fee? Do we need to pay that if we have insurance? And what is the communication fee/allowance for?

Thanks!

Fall 2012

1) health fee is not waived by having insurance
2) communication fee is a Newhouse specific fee; I think(but you may wanna check) it is for all administrative access in the three Newhouse buildings for students…copy machines, cameras, studios etc…

Books, personal expenses, supplies, transportation all fall into optional, depends on the kid, expenses

What is the program fee? That one is a mystery to me…

Thanks Rodney. That program fee has me curious too. We go to admitted students day on Monday. I’ll ask then.

Just found this info. If you go to page 9 it explains the fees. <a href=“Comptroller’s Office - BFAS – Syracuse University”>Comptroller’s Office - BFAS – Syracuse University;

If you are trying to cut expenses… My son saves on his board expenses be only signing up for two meals per day… He rarely has time to eat breakfast in the dining hall and keeps snacks in his room for when he gets hungry. It is much cheaper and he doesn’t pay for food he doesn’t eat.

Great suggestion… I think we are going to do that as well. :)

Also, a small microwave and a mini fridge are a good investment. If you keep your eyes open in a month or so, you might get a refrigerator cheap from a college student who doesn’t need one anymore.
