Are sports a big part of college?

Are sporting events a big thing in college? and will I be missing out if my college doesn't have very good sports teams?

It depends…if you go to a big D1 school, then yes, sports are a big part. If you go to a small LAC, then probably not.

Just like with frats it depends on the school.

Yes! It can be a huge part of the social and cultural life of a college. But more importantly is how important sports are to you? Would you miss it if they aren’t there? Don’t care?

Like others said, it varies dramatically by the school. I went to a small liberal arts college and most students couldn’t care less about sports. The only spectators at sport events are the athletes’ friends.

At my college traditions replaced the role of sports in establishing school spirit. Parade Night, Lantern Night, Hell Week and May Day bring most of the student body together for a cheerful event.

Sports are HUGE at my school (Division I, Big Ten etc.). If you don’t like sports and go to my university, you either end up liking/following sports like the rest of us, or you are in the serious minority (and probably won’t enjoy attending MSU because that is a great part of what our social lives/school spirit revolve around).

All 3 of my children chose great schools with lovely campuses in big cities…Emory, University of Denver, and American University. My husband has a great collection of t-shirts, each of which says “X University Football…Still Undefeated.”

It depends what facets of life would make the right college life for you. My kids are huge sports fans but having a huge sports scene on campus wasn’t as important to them as other things.

Personally at my school (FAMU) nobody cares about sports. The Band is where we really shine. Though frats are pretty active here to.

My school is big on sports. But the only impact on me is that during game days I see a bunch of random people walking around. There will be some “huge” game against a “huge” rival and I won’t even know about it until I see every parking space filled. So in other words it’s only a big thing if you bother to care.

Sports are stupid anyways. I don’t understand why people get so personally revved up about a game in which the outcome makes no difference.

Sports are huge at my school. And I love it. I knew I wanted to go to a school with a ton of school spirit. It’s just so awesome being in the student section of a college football or basketball (or for my school, even soccer) game.

I like that sports are big at my school, even though I don’t like sports very much. It’s such a unifying thing, and you can’t beat the atmosphere on game day. But if you’re not really into that, then I don’t think you’re missing out all that much.

Pyroza: Hey man, I go to a small LAC and sports are kind of a big deal here lol. For a small LAC we have some D1 sports and take part in the Patriot League against other Ivies and half of the student body is pretty much athletic and get involved in club/intramural sports.

I’m not a sporty person, but I’ll definitely attend the games just for school spirit and the experience. Then I just usually leave right after the halftime show … lol. I think if our school didn’t have sports, it wouldn’t be as fun.

Football is HUGE at USC.

So big, that I couldn’t even get a student ticket to the first home game, due to the system overloading. They gave out 14000 student tickets… and I couldn’t grab one. >_<

But I definitely visited schools that really didn’t care that much about sports. It just depends on the college and that particular season.
