I’ve seen people comment that if you’re not being recruited, varsity sports don’t matter much in admissions and are the equivalent of any other EC. For me, I am only able to join one other school club as my sport takes 3 hours of my time for six days a week. In my opinion, the passion and commitment in competing in varsity sports outweigh the average participation of a club— do college admissions agree with this and take all of this into account?
You should participate in activities you enjoy. If you enjoy playing sports, you should keep playing them!
The some of best ECs are ones that intertwine with your major or give you the ability to take up leadership positions. If you’re really adamant about your sport mattering even more, try for positions such as team captain.
You will be able to tell the school how many hours a week you spend on the sport. Having 18 hours a week dedicated to the sport will certainly prove more meaningful than an hour a week in the food club or something.
Think about it. Do sports really set you apart from most other high school kids in a college’s eyes? No.
ECs show involvement around things that interest you and that you have interests and passions beyond the classroom. Serious dedication to a sport is that. Schools look for quality over quantity.
There are plenty of sports that require tons of time and aren’t offered at most colleges (figure skating, archery, etc.) I suspect that kids who do those sports can stand outand aren’t penalized for not belonging to clubs at school.
