@Earthmama68 do call the admissions office if you have concerns about this.
St Olaf is one of the few midwestern colleges that promise to meet full need. They have a long standing relationship with some urban high schools and have been working hard to expand their diversity.
My D is a freshman. She’s had a great year and really likes St Olaf, esp how musical it is. She is doing Great Con (it is 2 yrs though you can do just 1 year). My D is doing both years. It is a heavy workload and the interim class you do freshman year is a lot of work. However, I think that those who do Great Con are looking for that. Just be aware that it is a lot of reading and writing.
Re the protests. My D has been participating and spent the night in Buntrock Commons with many others. Looks like it was packed. I see it as positive. There is a strong sense of community and the students are standing up for those who have been targeted with notes on cars or in bags. As the president wrote, it is despicable and cowardly. It is also out of character for the school. The student community wants to show their support for students of color at the school and also make clear to the administration that this is a big deal to them.
Incidents of racist speech are happening at all schools. When it happened at St Olaf, students protests and held vigils.
@Earthmama68 What racist incidents?
@liska21 That’s good to hear. We all know that things like this can and do happen at every school. The important thing is how the administration deals with it. I’ve heard from two friends of mine who have friends who teach there.They are horrified by what happened, but also relatively happy with how it is being handled. It’s good to see the students speaking up!
@JenJenJenJen Just Google it. It’s all over the news.
I have also posted links to it on a thread about minority students being targeted.
Thank you. This thread was at the top of “latest posts” so I just wandered in. I hope everything is okay over there.
It’s too bad when one ass of student can reek so much ill feelings by spewing hate. It’s nice to hear that the school community has come together to show support.
