Are students thru RD given lower priority for housing than those accepted ED?

Like.. Hayden is the most sought after, would RD students have less of a chance of getting it?

Hayden tends to fill up very quickly, and as you said, it’s most popular among ED applicants. I know RD kids who were there my freshman year, but I’m not sure whether that’s by chance or specific circumstance. In general, I’d say you’re less likely to get it, so if it’s your first option, find a second you’re comfortable with.

Yes. NYU ED accepted students have priority and many traditionally have chosen Hayden (most popular). However, some have written that Founders has become a contender for one of the favored dorm choices among incoming freshmen.

The good news is that there should be slightly less demand for Hayden with the opening of Founders in the last 2 years and its favored status among some of the incoming freshmen each year (my guess).

Even prior to Founders’ rise on the list of favored dorms, I read that some RD students do get into Hayden. This is likely due to timing of submitting your housing application/ survey and LUCK. So, if you are a RD accepted student who wants Hayden, I would submit all materials and have your roommate (if chosen by yourself) submit the housing materials at the same time (asap). That hopefully will give you a slight edge against a slightly smaller pool of applicants interested only in Hayden as first choice (with the Founders contingent that favor that dorm). Of course, you should be prepared to get a choice farther down your list of choices.

As noted previously by quite a few people, generally people seem to adjust and like the dorm they are in.

Are you most likely not going to get your first choice if you’re an RD applicant? If I do go I’d want to live close to campus, no matter how nice it is, I wouldn’t want a 10 minute walk because that’s just my preference lol

theresaax2,

It depends on what your first choice is. If it is Hayden (the most popular one near the school buildings), you may have less of a chance with priority given to ED students.

However, you may get your first choice if you apply to Weinstein or Goddard (the latter requires a separate residential living/ community application, sorry I don’t remember exact name). These two are also close to the school buildings. Haha, I think you may have a good shot if you submit your application as early as possible and request Weinstein, the dorm with two dining areas but “prison-like” walls. Since you do not care too much about “niceness” so long as it is closer to school. These three are good for proximity to most classes.

Alright thanks evolving!

Sorry, I do not mean to discourage you from applying to Hayden. If you like the dorm, by all means, list Hayden as your first choice, then Weinstein as your second choice. Some RD students do get into Hayden. As I mentioned in another post, Founders might have become the first choice for people who used to choose Hayden as first choice. Plus, Third North appears to have become the new social hub competing with Hayden’s traditional reputation as the “most social” dorm.

I do not believe you can list Goddard as a second or third choice. If that is the one you want, with the close knit and “intimate” community, no real group gathering places except hallways but best location to school buildings, then file a separate application for this residential college. Also, some (not sure if all) Goddard residents literally roll out of bed and stay in the building for their Writing the Essay class. Here is more info on Goddard, as well as its terrific location, in terms of what you require:

If you have questions about Goddard, I was there my frosh year and stayed in the ResColl and am in the upperclassman building (Broome Street) now.

My son was RD last year and got his top dorm… Founders. Chill. Fortunately, there are a lot of great choices.
