Hey guys, I’ve had a couple counselors tell me that subject tests aren’t very helpful because UCs find them unfair as many students don’t have the resources to take these extra tests. Is there any truth behind this, and if not, does it have the same weightage as AP tests for UC apps? Thanks.
It depends on school and major. As an example,
UCLA: SAT Subject Tests are not required, however, applicants to the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science are strongly encouraged to take the following SAT Subject Tests: Math Level 2 and a science test (Biology E/M, Chemistry, or Physics) that is closely related to the applicant’s intended major.
UCSD: For prospective engineering, biological or physical sciences majors: We recommend that you submit scores from 2 SAT Subject Tests closely related to your major. If you are taking a math subject test, Math Level 2 is required.
UCB: SAT Subject Tests are no longer required. However, they are recommended for the College of Engineering and College of Chemistry: Math Level 2 and a science test (Biology E/M, Chemistry, or Physics) closely related to your intended major
@Gumbymom probably has more detailed information.
If you want to be competitive and SAT subject tests are recommended for your major by the specific UC campuses, then I suggest that applicants take the exams recommended. If costs are a factor, then the UC’s will consider this issue in their application review. Good scores can only help your chances in a very competitive environment.
