Are Summer Classes harder than fall/spring classes?

Hi, I was wondering if summer classes are harder than fall/spring classes. I wanted to take classes over the summer so that I can start building a strong GPA for transfer, but my mom says that I shouldn’t because they’re harder since they’re so short. I was planning on taking the freshman intro course, speech, and general zoology. Thanks!

The class itself isn’t harder, just faster. Much faster!

You basically learn and do the same amount of work in a shorter period of time.

@MLM @waterangel501 Would you say it’s the same rigor as AP courses?

AP courses have the whole semester to cover material. Summer CC classes are 6-8 weeks.

summer courses are fast and run for 5 weeks to 8 weeks. I took general chemistry 2 and it was super fast. Though I don’t regret taking it. But the advice I will give you is that in summer course. It’s too fast that you won’t learn anything. You will learn but 5 weeks will go by fast.

Here, we have 8 week summer classes.

They say it’s 16 week curriculum compressed into 8. I made it a point to ask my geometry instructor what material the 16 week class people got that we didn’t. He said same material, just more time.

I dunno, I feel like we had to cut stuff out to meet deadlines. Still, it was hell for me. I am not a strong math person so I barely passed with a C. Geometry is not a 100 level class, so it was not a big deal transcript-wise. (universities only look at 100 level classes)

Also took speech 101; I got an A but it’s a really easy class. Most nerve-wracking class I ever took. But I am glad I got it over quick. Like pulling off a band-aid. I think you can ace speech no problem.

Can you email the zoology instructor and ask for a syllabus or a curriculum to see what all is covered?

Nonetheless, I am glad I took 8 week classes. It proved to me that I could do it. The “pain” and struggle I went thru caused growth in me as a person and as a student by pushing me out of my comfort zone. Psychologically, it made me stronger and better abled to produce results under pressure.

@Pablocruise Thanks! Yeah, I would never take a math class in 8 weeks lol, it’s my weakness. I know i’ll be fine with speech, since I’ve competed in the NFA with speeches for a while now. I decided i’m only going to take the freshmen intro class and speech, though. Thank you!

At my college summer term is 10 weeks long. I am taking summer classes so I can focus on building a strong gpa and getting some of my prerequisites out of the way before I transfer next Fall. This is my first year in college taking summer classes in May so I will see how it goes. Fall term at my local community college is only 7 weeks and it is as if you are cramming everything in at the last minute. But if you are good with time management, and don’t let reminders slip through your fingers you should be okay.
