This is a stupid question but I want to make sure I have this 100% correct…
…Especially since my guidance counselor still hasn’t submitted my recs, transcript, or anything…
…or one of my other teacher recs…
…
ANYWAYS! Can someone clarify this for me?
Recs and transcripts can be sent after the deadline, which, I’m pretty sure, is 11:59 on 10/15.
@soosoo948 How can they be sent after you send in your common app? I mean, I have one teacher rec submitted and it seems to be packaged with the app itself. How would you send them after the deadline? Excuse my ignorance… Kinda panicking here…
The application is due by 11:59 on 10/15. It does not matter what time the application is in on the 15th. I would not wait until the last possible minute. Does your school use Naviance?
It is common for high schools to send transcripts/counselor rec/teacher recs AFTER the student has officially submitted their application. It is OK if these arrive at the college after the application deadline, as long as the student’s application was on time.
Always best not to wait until the last minute (you don’t want to add to your anxiety by having some last minute computer/internet problem…), but as long as you ‘submit’ by 11:59pm, you’re fine.
Just as mentioned above. You’ll be able to hit submit even if those things aren’t in. Although, UNC asks that all materials be in 2-3 weeks by the deadline, so just keep that in mind. Good luck!
@twogirls Yes, my school does use naviance. I went in early today to talk to my guidance counselor about where she stands with my transcript, rec, etc, and she told me that she is able to send that stuff in after my deadline… So that’s good.
Does the same apply for teacher recs? One of my teachers still hasn’t submitted my recs… I am assume though that since we run it through naviance, she can send them in after the deadline? Am I correct?
Yes you are correct. The application must be in by the 15th ( any time on the 15th). They give you 2-3 weeks for everything else to arrive, and the teacher recs can be uploaded through Naviance ( you have to " invite" them). You will be able to track when the teachers upload the recs and when they are downloaded by the college.
@twogirls What a relief… Thank you!
@twogirls Actually I have one more question. Since my school does naviance, I asked two teachers to write me recommendations. One teacher has spent like… 2 months working on them and the other has worked on them for less. For some schools, they only want one recommendation so what would happen if both of them press submit recs? If they both press submit, can I choose the one I want to be sent or is it first come first serve? I really hope I can choose because I do want one teacher’s recommendation over the other (just because she worked so hard on my rec)
@ThatAPesExamTho my school had me select which letter I prefer when I submitted my transcript request form. see if your school does something similar
If you told both teachers to submit their letters to UNC, they’ll both submit their letters.
(for my school we gave each teacher a separate envelope, idk about you)
Yeah, I told one of my teachers to write it for all my colleges and for the other… well I didn’t really specify… Just kinda said “Here’s my resume!”
As far as I know, they’re both making them for all my colleges… Probably should look into that.
What I fear is that the teacher I didn’t specify it with is going to send all the recs tonight before I am able to speak with her about which colleges I want her to write them to… Ugh!
Some schools only ask for one letter but will accept another if it is sent. In this case, Naviance will allow both letters to be uploaded. Some schools will only allow one letter to be uploaded and will block the second letter. I know a boy last year who applied to a school and the “wrong” teacher uploaded first and the teacher he wanted was unable to upload the letter- it was blocked. He called the school and was told to mail the letter.
If you have any schools that will only accept one letter, then I would tell the “unwanted” teacher to hold off on those particular schools. You could give her a list of schools you want her to send to. If a school will accept both letters even though it may only need one, it will not matter. Just make sure that the schools download both letters- you can keep track on Naviance.
@twogirls I have a strong feeling that I am going to end up being that boy. Hopefully not!
UNC only requires one letter, but will accept two. My daughter sent two letters to every school. No letters were blocked on Naviance. My guess is that most schools do not block any letters, but it can happen so it is best to check it out ahead of time. Don’t worry if a mistake happens- you can mail in the letter.
@twogirls Thank you for helping me over the past two days. You answered a lot of questions that my guidance counselors were unable to help with. I really appreciate it.
You are welcome! I feel as though I learned a lot over the past few years and am happy to help.
