Are the dorms as bad as they look?

Online the dorms look really bad, So i’m wondering for those who have visited are the dorms as bad as they look?
http://www.american.edu/ocl/housing/academic_year_housing/on_campus_choosing_halls.html

At least each room has air!

The dorms online aren't really the greatest...but don't forget that American is an institution on the rise to greatness so it really isn't at its full potential yet. I stayed in a dorm for 10 nights over the summer, so I can share with you some of my experiences.

-They aren't huge, but I found that I could easily fit at least 2-3 weeks worth of clothes in the closets/drawers.
-The rooms themselves are decently sized, and the air conditioning/heat is powerful (which was good esp after hours outside in the 95 degree heat).
-The beds were comfortable and I slept extremely well.
-The desks held a ton of stuff, even more than my home one did.
-There are no bathrooms in the rooms themselves (at least not in Leonard), but instead there are shower stalls. Whenever I previously experienced showerstalls, they were either boiling or freezing one minute to the enxt. At AU I was able to spend more than 2 seconds in there before being scorched or made into the human icicle and the water pressure was delightful.
-They have a number of take-out lists in the lobbies as well as couches, chairs, and Leonard has a TV/game lounge.
-The windows are big and offer pleasant views of the surroundings
-OH! The fire sprinklers rarely go off so the water has been sitting up in there for a while...if they go off I heard the water is brown.

Otherwise, they were great and I loved living there for 10 days and most likely will live there for the next 4 years providing I don't get into NYU.

lol, same here with NYU

lol yeah they don't really seem to have rhyme or rhythm to their admissions this year (NYU)...a girl I know got into GSP w/a 3.8/1270 etc. but then I heard of like 1420s and 1190s getting in as well with either tons or no ECs etc.

It's all so strange...

But anywho, AU's dorms I think were a little bigger than the ones I saw when I was at NYU's open house.

The only BIG complaint I had w/AU's dorms were the fact that the elevator service was like molasses, but they were also roomy (21 people could squeeze in uncomfortably).

The dorms at AU were the best of all the schools I looked at. The room looks small, but I have sooo much space in the closet and cabinents, even though my parents told me over and over that the amount of stuff I was bringing couldn't possibly fit in my half of the room haha. The wall unit saves a lot of space anyway. Plus, the pictures online have the desks in the middle kind of, and you can play around with the furniture and get a good set up and a lot of floor space. Yeah, the bathrooms are down the hall, but you get used to it after like.. 2 days. Plus, once you're not a freshman, you can try to get a suite-style room with a shared bathroom between two rooms.

Not to mention the bathrooms, kitchen, and hallways are cleaned each and every day for you (except for the suites).

do we have to clean our own rooms? (not being lazy, it just means more stuff to bring like vacuum cleaner)

yeah, you have to clean your own room - but there are several vacuums at the front desk of each building you can use!

Xanderman,
On what do you base the statement that AU is on the rise to greatness?

On a few different things:

AU moved up 6 spots (from 92 to 86) in the US News rankings last year, and was recognized for it.

While AU has always been good, in recent years it has skyrocketed in the quality of its applicants. Just look at some of the people who applied. They're strong candidates for the tougher of the Ivies and are seriously considering AU for their college choice.

Many people are now realizing that AU is easily comparable to the other big-name schools in DC (Georgetown, GWU, etc.) and it shows in the quality of students and Academics. Just look at the www.american.edu site - there's always something that say "X # of AU Students Named ___________ Scholar" etc.

There's much much more, but if you were implying that I was implying that AU isn't currently a good school, I didn't mean it that way. What I meant was that AU is currently a great school and is continuing to become even greater by the year.

Hi~We visited AU twice and I have to say that the dorms looked much nicer than most we saw and that is from a mother's perspective. The link with pictures doesn't look bad and it is exactly as we remembered. What we liked was the built-ins as they keep things oragnized and make for more space. I just wish we had seen it in the sun...it poured both times we were there. My son is strongly considering it!
