On a few different things:

AU moved up 6 spots (from 92 to 86) in the US News rankings last year, and was recognized for it.

While AU has always been good, in recent years it has skyrocketed in the quality of its applicants. Just look at some of the people who applied. They're strong candidates for the tougher of the Ivies and are seriously considering AU for their college choice.

Many people are now realizing that AU is easily comparable to the other big-name schools in DC (Georgetown, GWU, etc.) and it shows in the quality of students and Academics. Just look at the www.american.edu site - there's always something that say "X # of AU Students Named ___________ Scholar" etc.

There's much much more, but if you were implying that I was implying that AU isn't currently a good school, I didn't mean it that way. What I meant was that AU is currently a great school and is continuing to become even greater by the year.
