On the Yale Common App they asked for three majors I’d be interested in pursuing at Yale - are these binding? Or at the very least, would it be difficult to study something else than you listed? I ask because I didn’t put down any engineering majors in my three, but if you do, there’s an additional essay to write. I’ve just submitted my app to Yale a couple days ago, and now I’m re-considering engineering… if I didn’t write that additional essay and put it down in my app, can I still switch into the engineering program if I get into Yale? Or am I stuck with a Bachelor of Arts?
Are the majors you list on the Common App the only ones you may study at Yale (if you get accepted)?
Also, does it work the same way with other Ivy Leagues (and Stanford and MIT)? Thanks!!
All students apply to Yale as Liberal Arts Majors and choose a major during their sophomore year. Yale asks about your “intended major” to gauge your interests, but as more than 60% of students in the United States change their major at least once during there 4 years of college, Admissions cannot use the data as a recruiting tool, as the majority of students graduate with a different major then the one they wrote down on the Common Application. So, choose whatever major you might be interested in NOW – and no, you are not bound to your choice if admitted.
It works the same way at Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, MIT and many of the ivy league schools. The exceptions would be UPenn and Cornell where students must choose to apply to a specific school within the university.
Did we have to select three
You can select zero to three
