Are the PSAT cutoffs going up or down?

Hey guys. I got back a score of 218 on the PSAT. I live in New York, and last year, the cutoff was 218. I am wondering if anyone thinks the cutoffs are going up or down this year, or remaining the same.

From what I can gather, I think general opinion is that the cutoffs will stay pretty much the same and might even fall slightly.

I have a question of my own: Is the cutoff per state that people are mentioning the cutoff for Commended? If so, what determines the cutoff for semi-finalist?

My principal stopped me in the hall yesterday, and while the school isn't able to give me my exact PSAT score yet (supposedly they haven't sorted everything yet?), he mentioned that I'll probably get semifinalist, as the cutoff here in NJ was 221 this year.

It's usually around there, so I think the cutoff is staying the same - that's what the cutoff was for my eldest brother some five years ago.

I hope my principal's right about my score being good ...

18: the cutoff for commended is the same for every state in the US. last year, it was 201. This year, it may be higher.

the cutoff for semifinalist is different for every state. last year, it was 222 for Massachusetts. This year, again, it may be higher. As far as you and I are concerned, the Class of '06 is wicked smart. I do worry that my 224 is not high enough for semifinalist standing this year.

bump..............BUMP!!!!!!

zxchen06 don't worry, the most i've ever seen semi scores go is 222. even if class of '06 is smart there are still PLENTY of stupid people... i'm 95% sure you'll be a semi

how can u say 06 is smarter than 05

who are you directing the comment at anonymous31?

are u sure that commended cut off is 201? my counselor said around 198. i got a 200 and am desperately hoping i made the commended cut off.

i think you have a 50-50 shot

They changed the PSAT more this year than in past years because of the drastic change in the actual SAT. Is it possible that there will be a bigger shift in cutoffs as well? I know they try to keep scores about the same from year to year, but this year we might see some bigger variances from last year....

is the benchmark really going up? in my state, class of 05 is wayy smarter than class of 06, as a whole (from what i've heard) our cut off last year was 216, hopefully it won't go any higher cause i didn't score that much higher =</p>

Xinerz- are you from washington?

nah, i'm from tennessee

which is why 216 is a huge huge huge cutoff, cause tennessee's supposed to be "dumb" =P

it says the top 55,000 people on the score report will recieve some sort of recognition, this could mean the cutoffs could go donw??

zxchen06: thanks for the explanation earlier.

Well, not to discourage anyone here- but I have a BAD feeling that the cutoffs are going up. Without analogies, some people may find it easier to do reading passages straight. Many scored high in math in writing.

Horray for Arizona, with a cutoff of 212 :)
I got a 212 (last year), and now the scholarship offers have flooded my house =D

Is the cutoff of 212 for this year, and how did you find out, if it is?

it doesnt really matter who i am directing it to. I would just like to know why it was said by zxchen06
