<li><p>Rightwingers like to credit Reagan for winning the cold war when much of the credit should go to Gorbachev.</p></li>

<p>However, credit should be given to Reagan for developing a relationship w/ Gorby in which during their talks, Reagan was shocked to learn that the Soviets really did fear a 1st strike from the US.</p>
<p>Reagan realized this was madness and thus was the one who really pushed for nuke warhead reduction (of which Reagan got immense flack from right-wingers).</p>
<p>Feeling more secure about Russia, Gorby made the decision NOT to send in tanks and aircraft when the Eastern bloc states rose in revolt (this whole thing about the Soviets falling due to “Star Wars” or the military might of the US is utter crap; the Soviets had the military means to put down the uprisings as they did to the Czechs a couple of decades earlier).</p>
<p>And I say this as someone who can’t stand Clinton.</p>
