Are the sciences really THAT hard?

All I hear is that the sciences are incredible difficult at SBU…and that it’s not worth it to take them because you will do poorly even if you try hard.

Take these into assumption

You study a lot

You do all assignments

Pay attention in class

…would is still be difficult to earn an A in say an Organic Chem or any other science class?

P.S. Do the professors curve?

I am not a SBU student, but according to my brother (graduated from SBU in 2004), the science classes are like any other class... you have to work hard to get a good grade. The classes you will attend will be on par with those in other university's. And getting an A in Organic Chem (the biggest "weed out" class for pre-med students) is difficult, but not impossible. If you do the things you listed above, I'm sure you will do fine.

Regarding curves, I'm not sure about SBU, but professors usually curve. The generosity of the curve all depends on the professor.

It depends on the class. Mostly, they're hard but doable. It depends on how good you are at science, of course... some people can work hard, study all the time, and still not pull a decent grade. In some classes, having a knack for the subject is enough to let you skate through; in most being good at the subject just opens the door to the possibility of an A if you also really work at it.

If you're good at science and math and keep up meticulously with everything, you'll do well. There's no big mystery there. The trick is keeping up with 5 or 6 classes that all have 10-20 hours of work a week. Add in a social life, a job, eating and sleeping... and that's a lot to keep track of.

Assuming you get off the waitlists, what are you taking in the fall?

Orgo, Physics 121/123, PHI: Logical and Critical Reasoning, Intro Psych, MAT: 126......yeah I know, I am probably going to do this semester, especially since I can't even find housing.
