Are there any Finance/Business Interships over the Summer for 16 year olds?

Hey, So basically I am 16 years old and I was wondering are there Finance or Business internships avaiable over the summer? I already have some leadership skills and a decent GPA. Will it be possible to get an internship? Any Links?

Most likely not, unless there is something you can get with a state agency or your local chamber of commerce. You will most likely not get a paid internship.

Even if you’re a freshman/sophomore at a top college, you might have problems finding a job. I won’t lie to you; your best shot is to know somebody who can bring you in to a company you’re interested in.

Unless you know somebody, no. There are plenty of students in college with relevant coursework that they can pick from…why would they pick a high schooler when they can pick a college student that will probably be more useful?

absolutely no way you’ll get a paid internship in that field…especially in this job market…unless your parent is CEO or something

Yep, basically impossible unless you have a very good connection with someone. Even then it would still be hard for that person to justify bringing in a 16 year old rather than a college junior.

well it depends because I know in nyc teens have internship programs such as futures and options or all star DSY which pairs you up with fortune 500 companies and you get paid min $10 an hr for 6 weeks during the summer (futures and options is minimum wage though)

If you know someone they may take you on. Probably as a gofer/file clerk. You may get to watch some things if it doesn’t violate any confidentiality issues. They’ll probably teach you some of the more exciting parts of the job. Don’t expect them to let you do any of the actual work.

I would ask your parents or one of their friends if they know someone. Ask you teachers if they know anyone. (You’re starting your networking which is an important part of business and a learned skill) Even if it’s only a couple of weeks and without pay It would be great experience that you could put on your college application.

You should also ask for an “informational interview” with someone in that business. Anyone will do. They don’t have to know you or your family. Most people will give some time if they can. They’ll give a half hour to a full day to ask questions and learn about the business. Sometimes those may lead to a internship or gaining an interested mentor in the business.

If a friend of my family ask me, I wouldn’t give it a second thought. I would say yes. College and MBA interns are there to work and gain experience in a field in which they have already invested a lot of money and time. H.S. interns are there to decide if they like the field and to learn about business and finance in general.

Many people encourage teens that seem be interested early on. We will help you decide if that is what you want to do and how to go about it. If you change your mind after, most adults understand. You’re only 16, you should try everything.

My son tried last year and was rejected by the firm once they realized he wasn’t currently registered at a college to which he could receive credit for his efforts (its an unpaid internship designed for lower level college students). That was with Smith Barney. He ended up landing a summer job working for a national law firm instead (learned a lot and plans to return back for this summer as well…).

A law firm is great experience. High finance involves a basic understanding of legal concepts. Business, in general, requires a legal understanding. Any H.S. student that interned in a law firm is golden.

He is probably better off at the firm. He would never have gotten there if someone had discouraged him from trying and then trying again somewhere else.
