Are there any grants/loans to help pay debt owed to Community College???

I have been waiting 2 years for the open enrollment for kansas city’s only part time Nursing program. I was takibg summer courses to go beyond my pre reqs and bc of my ex battling custody and changing things up immediately, i had to withdraw. I now owe the school $2600 and they wont release my transcript. I have till August 1st. Are there ANY resources out there that can help me pay this debt off by then??

Thank you!!

If you own a home, you could get a home equity line of credit to use equity in your home to pay off higher interest debts like a student loan. Short of that, you presumably don’t have assets or else you could have paid it yourself. So you would basically be asking for a loan to pay off a loan and the only people likely to do that are cash advance places that give car title loans or paycheck loans which are virtually always a very bad idea. Perhaps you have family who could help?

Sometimes schools will release transcripts if you arrange a payment plan. See if yours will.

@MelaHelasdottir

I’m assuming you are working full time now. If so…can you pick up a job maybe waiting tables or something a couple of evenings a week…and use THAT money to pay off this loan?

Since you want to become a nurse, how about working as a personal care aide, they always seem to need people. Can a friend or relative watch your kids for you while you work?

Or you could maybe babysit for other people during summer?

Do not ignore that bill. Meet with them and work out a payment arrangement.

Make sure you will be able to be successful in nursing school with the way things are in your private life. It’s going to be a tough few years. You don’t want to have to drop out of nursing school once you start.

I apologize for the all caps in the title. It came from a frantic place.

I currently work full time as a certified medical assistant for a hospital system’s cancer center in Kansas City, KS and I am raising 3 kids alone now. I dont have any family out here nor family that could help with this.

I have two months to fix this and the school states I have to pay in full.

Thank you folks for responding and for your ideas. Ill keep trying and if it’s meant to be, something will give.

Good luck. I hope you are able to get the debt paid off.

You’re raising three kids alone w/o family nearby.

I’ll be frank with you…I admire your desire to become a nurse, but this probably isn’t the best time. W/o any outside help, I’d be concerned that you’d find yourself needing to drop classes and have unsatisfactory progress, and perhaps owe the new school money. And if you’re on a Pell Grant, you’d owe for that…and perhaps lose a semester of qualifying for Pell.

If you’re not getting child support for those 3 kids, then right now, try to get that squared away. And perhaps move near where family can help out. Seriously, I can’t imagine a single mom of 3 young kids w/o any family support being able to keep all the plates in the air, kids ready for school and all that entails, while working AND going to nursing school. If you can live near or with family, then those extra adults can be lifesavers.
