I have contacted 12 research programs and none of them allow students under 18 to study research. However, I have spoken with many high school friends that study research...
How can I find those opportunities? Where?

Why don’t you ask your high school friends how they found their opportunities?

@FuturDoc12: If you find some, please send me a PM or something! I’m still looking, but it is tough; especially if there’s not a good state flagship in your city.

PM me too!

haha, I will make sure to do that when I find out. It’s tough!:)

Where do you live? Do you have another summer, or are you a rising senior?

Contact individual departments at your local/state university, rather than trying to find research through a wide program. Chances are, these programs are already full or are very competitive. I know a friend of mine who took the initiative to call the professors individually one by one and got an internship in a lab. Once she got there, there were kids from other schools working there already, except they had to go through an application process unlike her.

I know that (if you live in Virginia) VCU’s medical school has research opportunities for high school students, undergrads, and grad students throughout the summer every year. Again, you just have to contact individual professors and ask if they could accomodate an intern.

Recently many researchers have been funded by the NIH. As a result these researchers have been able to take more high school students and college students for research.

Just put in your zip-code, desired distance, and see if there are any opportunities.

^Unfortunately, the closest thing to me is 175 miles away, which will not exactly work out :(. I’ll keep searching, and good luck to OP & anybody else looking!

I am doing clinical research right now and I am in high school. It’s a summer program through a local univeristy that is affiliated with a hospital. Try looking around for programs like this that help high school students get a feel for research. Or, as the other posters said, just keep looking. Also, if your school has some sort of internship class or period, see if they can match you up with a private lab or research facility.
