I want to do my whole undergrad in at European university. Problem is that it costs $10,000-$15,000 to attend decent ones after factoring in all the other costs.

The foreign universities offer almost no scholarships to non-EU students. So questions are:

Is any level of federal aid applicable to foreign universities? Grants? Subsidised loans? Unsubsidised loans?

Are there any U.S. scholarships that can be used toward a foreign university? Most say that eligible students must be attending a U.S. school. Is that a strict requirement?

Are there any private loans with reasonable rates that can be used to pay for education abroad?

If you attend certain approved foreign institutions of higher education, you are eligible for unsubsidized federal loans. You can look on the pull down list here to see if your school is on the approved list

The loan limits are the same as if you attended a college in the US. ($5500 for freshmen, $6500 for sophomores, $7500 for juniors and seniors)

If you can attend a reasonable foreign university for a cost of $10,000-$15,000 (factoring in all costs), then you’re already a big winner. I’d take the same route, except my kid is uncomfortable going out of country (I thought I’d hit the jackpot in a previous thread when I learned of the super-bargains in the UK). Too bad, but not all kids are ready for that kind of great experience.

But you’re there dude! Go for it!

@MisterK if you don’t mind me asking but what thread about super bargains in the UK?

Ah, I’ve checked the FAFSA list. It’s a bit disappointing to find out that it only covers one of the schools I’m interested in attending. But I wonder why all the scholarships I saw out there are only for attending U.S. universities? What is the reasoning behind that? I’d really like to save on as many costs as possible even if I’m getting a good deal.

ChasingRed - This is the thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1091148-some-universities-charging-9-000-may-look-rather-silly-says-minister.html

Really an eye-opener - I learned that COA for Oxford, including travel, would be so much less than top-level private here that my whole family could go to England each summer for a long vacation and still save.

After I read it, a few people PMed me to indicate that there are other great bargains in the UK as well, even better than Oxford and well-respected schools. Also some great bargains in Canada.

Wow thanks so much for the thread!
