I want to take some summer classes at some point, but am having a difficult time finding institutions that will process federal financial aid (namely federal govt. student loans like the PLUS Loan).

Can you think of any universities that will process federal government financial aid for Visiting Students during their Summer Sessions - or do basically no colleges anywhere do that?

Federal aid is only available to students enrolled in a degree-granting program of studies - visiting students cannot lawfully receive federal aid. Sorry. Do you have loan eligibility remaining for the year (did you borrow your full loan amount of loans this year?) - if not, request the rest before the end of spring term & use it to pay for your summer classes. If you have already used your full annual eligibility, you wouldn’t be able to borrow any more in the summer even if a school could give federal aid to visiting students.

“You wouldn’t be able to borrow any more in the summer even if a school could give federal aid to visiting students.”

That is not true.

While there are limits on how much can be taken out for certain types of federal student loans, the only limit for how much a student may take out with a PLUS Loan is the full Cost of Attendance.

“Federal aid is only available to students enrolled in a degree-granting program of studies.”

This is true. I am enrolled in a degree-granting program. However, if I were to take classes at an institution during the summer that was different from where I was receiving my degree, then to that institution I would be a Visiting Student (but still a student enrolled in a degree-granting program).

Yes, it is true that IF you could receive federal aid, your parent could borrow a PLUS loan (if approved). The bottom line, though, is that you must be in a degree granting program in the school where you are taking classes.

A Plus Loan is a parent loan. It is NOT student financial aid.

How about this idea. Your parents can take a Plus loan during your academic year. They can do this up to the cost of attendance, I believe. If there is a surplus after you pay your academic year bills, you can use the Money to pay for, your summer classes.

The summer school where you are a visiting student CAN NOT award you need based financial aid because you are NOT a matriculated student at that school.

Thumper1 - Can’t do that. The PLUS loan during my academic year is being used to pay for that year’s costs (I’m attending university on 100% financial aid)

The summer school where I am a visiting student cannot award need based financial aid? - Thank you, that’s what I was trying to find out.

Schools cannot process federal aid for visiting students. As kelsmom (who is a financial aid officer) pointed out you must be a degree seeking student at the institution.

While federal aid is not an option, I suppose it’s theoretically possible that a school could offer institutional aid (its own funds) to a visiting student, but I can’t imagine why any college would want assist a student who isn’t even getting a degree from that institution. It wouldn’t be a wise use of limited financial aid resources. You’ll have to either forego the summer classes or earn the money to pay for them.

Thank you to everyone who offered their insights.

I have decided to just enroll in summer classes at my home institution, since taking out federal government student loans for summer classes at my home institution is possible unlike at institutions where I would be a visiting student.

WildcatKY, just wanted to say that it’s nice of you to come back to offer thanks and disclose your decision. It doesn’t happen often enough here–so many times posters will go out of their way to offer advice and potential solutions, and OP’s won’t even bother to respond (probably because they don’t like the answers they got).

If someone has full COA met without loans through college scholarships, fed grants, and outside scholarships, can they take out a federal student loan?

@Axand238–think about what? OP wants to take classes, not just a tour. Classes cost money, for visiting students or anyone else. It wasn’t unreasonable for OP to inquire about aid. I see that you’re new to CC and have enthusiastically jumped in with numerous posts, and that’s nice, but I think you need to read threads more carefully before posting, especially before shouting (all caps=shouting). This isn’t the first time you’ve jumped to an incorrect conclusion.

. No. You cannot receive loans if your COA is already covered.

For future reference it is best to start a new thread when the subject is different to an existing thread. You are more likely to get responses as people may not click on a thread they consider answered. (top of the threads, New Thread on left hand side)
