Are there forgiveable loans?

I am the parent, but when I was in school several years ago, I remember some classmates who had forgiveable loans. They had to maintain certain grades and complete their programs and then they didn't have to pay back the loans. Are there loans like this nowadays?

The military has programs where your loans are repaid when you enlist and serve out your enlistment. I am intimately familiar with the Navy's program, but understand the other branches have their own variations.

This is something you likely can't count on--but can be a nice bonus later...some professions have employers that will pay off your loans (or in the case of teaching--they might be forgiven) such as health-care providers. I have heard of this, but think it is fairly rare--probably varies by state and employer.

there are some programs like this: for example if you become a teacher in an undersprivileged area for a few years, your loans are forgiven

sorry, I don't have any links or more specifics, but I know they do exist

there is a program like this for texas college students. the college has to offer it. i dont know if you're from Texas, so this may not help any.

Yeah, if you become a teacher in an underpriviledged school, then they slowly take care of your loans, but you have to be there for a min. of 5 years (I heard)

There is a loan forgiveness for pre-engineering degrees in Missouri (part of MOHELA) if you are a beginning freshman in the fall. They forgive up to $3,500.

Check with your financial aid office for anything like this in your state.
