My D has chosen this field and I am wondering if there are jobs for such majors....what kinds and where she might end up.....it sounds like a very good fit for her as she is highly analytical and a great writer....just wondering if you all know anything about the real world aspects of think tanks.

There are also jobs as legislative staffers on Capitol Hill or in state capitols, in lobbying firms and trade associations, in executive branch agencies (depending on specialties), and with nonprofit associations. In some cases, a masters would strongly enhance job prospects and pay. She should try to get a good internship, summer or otherwise.

Hi, I'm interning at a think tank atm. There's tons of jobs in public policy. Momfromme got it right...capitol hill/federal staff jobs, lobbying firms, NGOS, think tanks. Also, most large corporations have governmental affairs divisions and take public policy people.

A couple words of advice: an MA in econ/polisci/public policy/whatever is absolutely essential to do anything more than glorified secretarial work. Think tanks in particular are very academic. To actually make a career out of think tanks, you pretty much need a PhD. Think of senior think tank researchers as professors that don't teach. Most of them actually are former professors.

Think thinks do hire graduates out of college to be research assistants. Research assistants make about 30k and don't do much substantive work, but they get to help with research and meet people. Then, if you like the field, you go back to grad school and get some real expertise in your interest area. Hope this helps.
