My daughter is in early high school and plays on a sports team, but isn't near talented enough to get an athletic scholarship. She is organized and a good manager. I have wondered if there are scholarships for kids like her that know the game and could help out on the side in this manner. Or paying student jobs that pay more than minimum wage.

My son is a student manager for a Div I team. He makes minimum wage but he works a ton of hours. There are some other perks as well, though you won’t get rich as a student manager. He is truly living his dream, though. Saw him on TV at his team’s game this weekend and he looked so happy.

What we found was actually that most managers are paid, rather than scholarships. Notre Dame has scholarships that you work your way up to, but I can’t recall any others.

Depending on the sport and the school, it is a different way to go to college, he actually logs more hours than the players, generally. He goes to class, goes to work and studies, but again it is what he wants to he doing. The off-season should be less intense.

My s considered taking a position as a sports team manager for the womens swim team. It would have paid something like 60% of his tuition his first year, and would go up every year. I suggested he not take it as it was very time consuming. A friend took the position and did it for many years while enrolled. Sweet $$
