Chilllllll brah

silly thread is silly.

there are no useless majors, only useless forum posts.

Media production.

It’s the easiest concentration to learn, IMO.

TV studios are hiring less and less people. Also, you have a huge seniority issue with guys and gals in their 60s still working the job as a camera operators, producers and video editors.

Jobs are generally scarce in most cities and very competitive in the major broadcast/media production markets (LA, NY and other major cities). Job listings are not awash in video editing or production roles.

So the only route is the entrepreneurial route, where you can hope to get a sponsorship or youtube partnership after posting content that stands out amongst the millions of videos placed on there.

Or if your lucky you might become part of a big corporation’s media team. But PR and advertising professionals are trained in media production as well.

History worthless? Sure! Why should we learn about the Holocaust anyways? Who needs to know that 600,000+ people perished in a war fought on U.S. soil? Why learn about how Title X came about when we’re already enjoying all its benefits? For that matter, who cares about what happened in the past, as long as we can reap its benefits?

(End of sarcastic rant.) The world you came to known and live today was shaped by what happened in the past. In a sense, all academic disciplines have their groundings in history.

Your post would only make sense under the assumption that no one knows anything that is not related to their major. Yes, we ought to all have a decent knowledge of history, but that point is completely unrelated to the question of what majors pay well.

Philosophy…I don’t think it’s useless, really, it would just be hard to get a job right out of college.

Hot Topic… I don’t find any major useless. They can be towards your goals. That is why one should know (or have a good idea) of what they want to do and strike close to it.

-Philosophy can used as a very valuable resource in using it for filmmaking, storytelling/writing, psychology, social science, etc. You don’t haft to depends on your major for a job directly related to it. I feel many students do this and become disappointed.
Speaking of Filmmaking, many people in the field (in all aspects from Acting, to creative, to technical) have degrees (or backgrounds) in Psychology, Political Science, Phil, Sociology, Anthropology, Literature, Psychics, Theatre Design.

As far as Media Production. True its a competitive field, turn around is relatively low, pending the region. Currently, its opening up more and more. Since the cancellation of Oprah many syndicated shows are being green lighted. Along with the movie industry. Script sales are up a fraction percent. In the field of show business like ventures, its important to overall evaluate within yourself, if you want to get a degree in that field and is it worth it? A college degree isn’t required to work a camera team. And to be honest (hope not to offend anyone) it doesn’t buy you any lee-way. One stands a chance of getting a job doing that if they find a job out of HS and work up to joining a good union. You’ll haft to do this after graduating with your degree. BUT some companies (like one I applied for recently in the creative field) require a undergrad degree of something. Doesn’t matter what, just the degree. Show business is a 2 way street and so is college.

I 4got this website that had an article “10 most useless majors” but you can try google I was dying of laughter b\c some of it was true and my mom told my bro not to major in english lit…each major had its reasons for why is was useless

Nevermind it was “10 most worthless college majors” and it was from www.holytaco.com…sorry idk how to link it from my phone

I remember that too. Art History being at the top. Bottom Line… Use your major as a strength of what you want to do, not a free ticket into a job. Unless in the field a degree is required…Medical, Biology, etc.

It amuses me that so many people only think you can get a good job if you major in math/science/engineering… in a few years, there will be such a large amount of young adults with engineering degrees looking for jobs that nobody will be able to find a (high-paying) job, while all the humanities and social sciences majors will be in short supply and will receive more employment opportunities at greater salaries.

FallenAngel9,

that’s why I love it when parents tell their kids that journalism is dead. That just means less competition for me ;)

Sorry but that is complete horse****.

Math/science/engineering kids are smarter and work harder than humanities/social science majors and in the event that the former can outnumber the latter than it will only be good for the economy as a whole because science kids can perform better than arts kids. Simple as that. Your major won’t get you a job but it will signal to the employer if you are intelligent and/or a hard worker or not and science majors are exactly that.

"just a bio degree in itself is practically useless…

Maybe gender studies is another useless one?"

complete horseradish

ActuarialDropOut,

That comment was the biggest piece of nonsense I’ve seen in a while.

Just because I am a humanities type of person makes me an idiot? Your ignorant comment shows just how stupid you are.

Please rethink what you just said. There may be more jobs in the science fields, but those of us who do not do that are not stupid.

Just so you know, the majority of people who make it, truly honestly make it, in the humanities are making more money in a week than you’ll make in a year.

Think about that, and if you seriously feel like disputing it then spurt out some facts for me. Trust me, you won’t find much about the salaries of big artists, huge PR firms, and fashion businesses versus the math and science industry.

There as many idiots doing math and science as there are doing art, English, and history.
The people who are good at what they do are the people who can analyze their information. All majors involve that, but not all people can.

No… just no.

Actuarial, just out of curiosity, have you ever actually had a job, been to an interview, or talked to an employer? If not, I can understand the ignorance of your post, but if you have then I fear for your future.

I disagree with what fallen said, but your response was just flat out incorrect.

Holy cow, this is DAR-worthy.

You fear for my future if I’ve had a job and don’t if I haven’t? Yeah, that makes perfect sense, bro. Keep on entertaining us with your words of wisdom.
