Are These Hooks?

I was reading about hooks on this board and was wondering if any of these were hooks…sorry if it sounds like I’m bragging…I just want to know…

Internship with Discovery Channel in NYC. Only suppose to be for juniors and seniors but a sophomore got it.

My uncle being CEO of BMG, a huge music company that owns many record labels like Jive, Arista, etc. BMG is apart of Sony.

Attending best community college in the country(I’m transferring).

EC

if he donates for you

not really

Yeah. I mean, it’s not gonna single-handedly get you in, but not bad.

No.

No.

Wow, the best community college!
/sarcasm

Anyways, sorry if I sounded rude, but it is not that great. Also, the CEO thing is not too impessive either. I mean, not only have I not heard of BMG, but he is you uncle, not an immediate family member. My last name is Madden, and I am distantly related to the famous John Madden, but so what.

However, the first thing is lightly impressive, but not a hook.

I remember those 12 Cds for $10 from BMG…lol

None of those are hooks, but the internship is a nice booster.

rmadden, please omit the sarcasm. It makes you look like a fool…especially when you admit in public that you’ve never heard of BMG.

OP, your internship is interesting and should be mentioned. The other two probably aren’t hooks. Good luck.

No, but a pretty decent EC

Big no if he has no connection to school! If he is an alumni and has donated “quite a bit” of money, it is a different situation.

No, slightly negative I might add

Thanks for the answers. One school I’m applying to is where my uncle got his Masters(NYU)…I don’t know if he has donated anything though. =/

None of them are that amazing.

Dougbetsy, please omit your insults. Sarcasm does not make someone a fool, but taking every thing one says does. The tides have turned my friend.

Also, awesome name! I wish mine sounded so cool!
/sarcasm

None are hooks.

Most colleges don’t care about your ECS. They care only about your stats. Onluy places like HPYS care a great deal about ECs when it comes to admission.

The community college you’re attending probably will be an advantage when you apply to in state public universities.

I agree that unless your uncle promises to donate big bucks (at least half a million $) if you’re admitted, your relationship to him won’t help your admission.

Congrats on the internship. It should help you professionally even though I don’t think it will help that much with your transfer unless you’re hoping to transfer into a journalism program.

“Most colleges don’t care about your ECS. They care only about your stats. Onluy places like HPYS care a great deal about ECs when it comes to admission.”

…?

Are you like a mom or something? I’ve never heard a person around 18 years of age instruct a peer to remove sarcasm from their post like that before…

The first one could be a possible hook if you really enjoy that stuff and can maybe write an essay about it.

Funny stuff.

^ I know, doesn’t it negate everything you were taught on CC? But Northstarmom knows her(?) stuff, so I would go by what she(?) says.

yeah actually, I’ve heard the same thing about EC’s…that they’re hard to verify for every student so college don’t put nearly as much weight on them as people think(except top U’s)

don’t know if it’s true though

The reason isn’t that they’re hard to verify. The reason that most colleges don’t put much admissions weight on ECs is that grades, score,s coursework are enough info for most colleges to select their students. Most colleges also accept the majority of students who apply to them.

It’s only the very top colleges – places like HPYS – that have such an overabundance of high stat applicants that these colleges can afford to pick and choose from their outstanding applicant pool to find the applicants who’ll create the most diverse, active, well rounded student body that’s possible.
