Are these safety for my?

that is why I have ALSO listed lower ranking state schools. And my primary question was to ask if those schools can be safety for me. Like rjr286 has set an example of talking to admission advisor at GWU, I would like to hear some facts or at least possible facts. And I appreciate every opinions that have showed great respect to answer the question.

sunada, there is more to your "chance" than GPA alone - and I know you understand that. Strong recommendations will count for a lot at those schools which are not just "by the numbers." Does your cc have any decent transfer counseling at all? If so, I would rely on their experience with past transfers from your own school with your stats and courseload.

If you are feeling a little afraid that even your "matches" are not safe, that is understandable. I tend to really want students to guard their chances with a solid safety - ie, your GPA and test scores (if you are using them) are in the top 25% of acceptees historically AND the school accepts a large % of transfers. Add one or two like that.

Once your acceptances are in (and I'm sure they will be :) ), decide where you want to go partially based on school reputation but partially on other things. Of the 4 you mention in post #7, you cannot go wrong. So think about - climate, inner city vs. college town vs. suburban, whether you want to "follow" a sports team and which one - you know, the fun stuff. You have worked hard and college is about more than just hitting the books and readying yourself for law school, especially when you leave the cc world and head to the 4-year university.

Will you be able to visit and overnight at any schools once accepted? This would be the ideal way to decide. Great good luck to you!

Edit: other ways to evaluate your chances if you haven't already: google each school's name and "common data set." See how many transfers they've taken, look at the GPA profiles, etc. But your own cc's track record will be the most help if you can access it.

Just my guess:

Safety/Match:
U. of Maryland-CP
Ohio State
U. of Wisconsin-madison

Slight Reach:
UC irvine (if CA resident)
Boston U
George Washington

Reach:
UM
UNC

Far-reach:
Northwestern
UT Austin
Virginia
Vanderbilt
Emory

I don't want to discourage you from applying to the reach schools, because sometimes you really can luck out with a good essay and strong ECs. However, these schools have >30%-ish acceptance rates, and so chances aren't very good.

Best of luck :)

CP's econ departments is good

jmmom, thank you so much for your thread. And I totally agree with you saying that I should consider other things than its reputation. And I have....
Like you mentioned, I am thinking about visiting the college once I get accepted.
Anyways, I go to a cc in IL and they don't have a lot of information on out of state schools. Also, I have visited all the college websites, and many of them didn't specify stats for tranfer students.
Where should I get those stats other than cc counselors or collegewebsites?
(I am already through with Collegeboard, so...)
and How do I track cc's record?

Well, it is true that it is hard to find data specific to transfers. Too bad that your cc doesn't have it, but I totally understand that they probably primarily feed in-state schools.

So, to choose a couple of safeties and give yourself some real comfort, I would look at % transfers accepted, which you can often find on USN&WR and/or college website and/or googling common data set for the school. Then, use the freshman data on GPA and scores (if you are submitting them) to find a school where you rank near the top 25% of a typical admitted class. That is the best you can do.

Are you considering any in-state schools as a safety? If so, and you know they're safe based on your school's track record, and you would be pleased to attend if it comes to that.... then you don't need to add any schools to your list. You don't have any smaller schools on your list - do they not appeal to you at all? You might find a safety at such a school.

sunada - I haven't had time to check your full list, but Ohio State looks awfully safe to me (the only complication being that like many on your list, it is a state school and I don't know how oos/instate transfers break down). It took 85% of transfer apps and had a minimum college GPA required of 2.0. UMich, UWisconsin and UMd-CP took around 40-48% with a minimum college GPA of 3.0. UC-Irvine takes over 60% of transfer apps with a minimum GPA of 2.0 - but these California schools are notoriously limited in the number of oos students (doesn't mean it can't happen; my friend's son transferred into a UC (he is in state) but all of his roommates were oos).

How about George Washington University?
Also, I live very close to Wisconsin Madison, and many people say it is kind of matching for me... What do you think?
Actually i wish I can go to U of michigan ann arbor, do you think I have a chance there? if yes, how much of chance do you think I have?

Like most of the parents on this board, I rarely speculate on "chances." Too chancey ;). It's just too hard to say because there are so many factors. We try to see if a school is safer/matchier/reachier based on your stats and the school's acceptance rate. With transfers, as you've said, there's not as much info and I also don't have full info on you besides GPA (eg, strength of courseload, SATs, recommnedations, essays). But of the three you just asked about, I'll post the info (2004) from USN&WR Premium Edition:

School # Transfers admitted % acceptance rate Min. GPA
UMich-AA 831 44% 3.0
UWisc-Mad 1082 48% na
GWU 351 37% na

So, you can see you exceed the "minimum required" GPA (doesn't mean that the typical applicant might not be much higher) and that their acceptance rates aren't particularly "safe" but aren't in the terrible reach range either (Stanford, eg, takes about 3-5% of transfer apps).

sunada, here's my advice. Forget "chances" for the schools you've already applied to or decided to apply to. When you've put your app in and done your best on it, that's all you can do. You'll have your answer (though not soon enough; believe me, I know the feeling, my S is a transfer applicant due to Tulane's phase-out of engineering).

Instead, now is the time to do one thing. Make certain - dead certain - that you have one or two schools on your list which ARE safety schools and where you would be comfortable. Figure out if you already have them using the type of info we're talking about here. If you don't, then add one or two. Then wait for the results to come in.

You do have a chance at several of your schools. But none of us can give you the comfort you're seeking. If you're not sure any of them are truly safe enough for comfort, add some safer ones.

Hey jmmom,
I was wondering do you happen to know the acceptance rate for individual colleges of UMich (engineering is the only I really wish to find out) as well as the GPA? Thanks and sorry for the irrelevant post.

No..... I wish.... (my S is an Engineering transfer also).
