do I need to retake chem for top schools?

Are either of you planning to major in chemistry or a related field? If not, the answer is a resounding no.

If you're an aspiring chem major, you * could * retake and no one would call you absolutely crazy, but imo, you don't need to. Focus on other aspects of your application.

740 Chem won't be a problem with Northwestern.

Oh, lord help you, you're in the 97-98th percentile rather than the 99th. I hope you can find some way to fix that.

"97-98th percentile rather than the 99th"

I doubt it, especially for chem. 800 is like 95th percentile. But to the OP, those scores are decent. they won't "WOW" the adcom, but they probably won't hurt you either.

You're mean. I have a 710 in chemistry. I hope that is good enough.

Well, I could have said that those scores will impress the adcom, but honestly, i don't think it's going to be the case. Those scores make him qualified academically, but they are pretty neutral, unless the OP is URM. And the fact that 800 is 95th percentile is widely published. I didn't make up anything.
