Are these scores enough for HYPSM?

French: 800
Math I: 750
US History: 730

So are these good enough for top schools? Also, should I bother with Math II?

And for MIT, would be worth self-studying Biology E, because they require a science, or would that be impossible in such short time?

It depends. Is French your native language? Are you applying to MIT?

no, my native language is definitely english. I took french I as a freshman, and ended with AP french as a junior. also… i went to a french-“immersion” middle school, but i don’t think colleges are aware of middle schools attended, right?

And about MIT… I was asking because I really like MIT, but I need to fulfill the science subject test requirement, so my application will depend on my ability to self-study Biology E and succeed on that test in the fall. I was only asking if such self-study would be possible in the few months that remain… but I probably shouldn’t have asked that in this same thread since it has nothing to do with my first question.

Sheesh, the question you’re asking is weird. Realize that literally hundreds of international applicants apply with like 800s in three subject tests. So the question of good enough is never quite relevant. Your scores are ‘good enough’ but not outstanding.

Also, why would an MIT applicant be taking Math 1? You’ll stand out (in the wrong way) for taking Math L1.

MIT states on their website “we do not have a preference as to which science you take or which level math you take.” I think this would indicate math 1 is fine.

[MIT Admissions: Standardized Test Requirements](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/standardized_test_requirements/index.shtml)

^^ Math L1 is fine…it doesnt matter what math you take; if you are good at math, you are good at math.

You should take another science no matter what, because most HYPSM schools require a math and a science…humanity subject tests are the optional ones…

personally, I took the Math L1 and L2, and then planning to take chem…(maybe physics if I think i will do good).

“because most HYPSM schools require a math and a science…humanity subject tests are the optional ones”

Not true in any respect.

^^ why is it that HYPSM schools do not require humanity subject tests then?

…if I do not take any will i not get in?

I think by October you can definitely finish studying one of the sciences required by MIT.

Thanks everyone, sounds good. I’ll just take Math II and Biology E in October, and then retake my reasoning test in November.

Gaoez: All of those schools require 2 (or, in H’s case, 3) subject tests, and allow the applicant to choose. For some engineering programs, they require that a math/physics test be taken, but all those who are applying to regular undergraduate programs have the freedom to pick the subject tests on which they will do the best.

Is there some merit in acing Math II and Literature to show that you excel in two different areas? Yes. But I myself am considering these schools and I only have SAT II scores from humanities tests: Latin, Literature and US History.

Take the tests that allow you to show your skill. If you’re a math/science person, there’s no harm in taking all math/science SAT IIs; if you’re a humanities-oriented person, I believe that it won’t hurt you to have multiple humanities SAT IIs.

do u guys think theres an advantage in applying to top colleges with sat 2’s in different subjects? like to show your more well rounded and stuff

^^ you have to take SAT subject tests to apply to top colleges…

However, the math I would be detrimental in the fact that the majority of the MIT applicant pool will no doubt have taken the Math II subject test, with many of the scores being higher than a 750.
I’m not 100% on this fact, but that’s what it would seem with all the engineering and science applicants to MIT.

Math II is really really easy. You can get 800 without prep. And humanities tests are the optional ones.

No I think MIT truly does not favor Math 2 over Math 1…
plus it does not really matter, because if you are good at math then you will be good at both…and if you are bad you are bad at both.

edit: ^^ I did NOT take calc (not offered until grade 12) and did NOT take any AP courses (school does not offer any except calc) and i got a 790…kinda suks in a way, but I guess it is still good.
