Well, I am just getting started writing my college essays now that common app is officially up and running. However, the two topics I am considering writing about may b too controversial and hurt me my chances of admittance to either yale or stanford SCEA (I havent decided which one yet)...what do you think?

Btw...I plan 2 b a bio major and econ minor

My faith in God and Evolution- Kind of a discussion of how I learned that a coexistance of christianity and biology was possible thru various ppl like Francis Collins, C.S. Lewis, and a few people in my personal life. I was raised in a fundy christian family and it was tough to even accept evolution. Then, I vacillated between atheism and christianity for a time and am now a christian.

A discussion of the health care crisis and how it should b solved

They both seem like excellent topics in the aspect that they relate wonderfully to your selected major/minor.
As far as controversy goes, I would never let something you feel strongly about go ignored for fear of rejection - if a college cannot be open minded enough to allow you to speak your views then I doubt you’d be very happy there. At the same time you may want to check what that college’s stance seems to be on religion, evolution, etc. if you’re worried.

Hey guys brainstorming, but would it b better to write an essay on the historical figure Francis Townsend who I greatly admire for both his medical achievements and his desire to reform social security. It might b better cuz i want major in bio and minor in econ. What do you guys think?

I think you should only try to tailor your essay to your major so much… I mean if you feel more comfortable writing about the issue in general than Townsend… write about the issue. Or… think about it this way. If you can write a college essay on Townsend without looking anything up… then its probably a go… but if Townsend is kinda of a stretch to try and fit your major… bad idea IMHO.

If you choose to write about him, just remember that ultimately this is supposed to be a personal, not an argumentative, essay. The essay should talk about YOU.
