DS is getting very frustrated with OSU. He was admitted some time ago and keeps getting things in the mail and phone calls, but still hasn’t heard about scholarship money. Today he came home, saw yet another letter, anxiously ripped it open and they’re looking for a deposit to secure his place. HUH? We’ll make our decision and send a deposit when we see what we’re talking about with scholarship money.

My older son was told he got 26K (over four years) early on when he applied in '05. Are they late in awarding scholarship money this year?

Notifications of the standard scholarship awards like Provost, and the basic Maximus awards for qualifiers, seem to be going out as usual. There are some other threads about this as well.

I recall that the formal financial "offer" letters don't come out until spring (March-ish) with full details of the financial offer for prospective students, but if you wait until then to accept via deposit, you put yourself awfully far back in the queue for housing. If it's financially possible, I would suggest "accepting" and sending a deposit if he is at all interested in attending just to get into the queue for housing.

But he should have gotten information on anything he has qualified for so far. You might want to give them a call if you think he should have received something but you haven't heard yet.

Thanks, Penniless Parent. I did call them this morning and learned that my older son got notification early on because he was eligible for the Maximus, but that the requirements for that have gone up and an ACT of 32 is now required. My younger son will be eligible for the National Buckeye Scholarship for $28,800 and a Trustees Scholarship for $4,200 and those are going to be awarded starting next week and will be done being awarded in about six weeks. I'm adding this information in case anyone else is wondering.

wait a minute. AH, are you saying OSU will award $33,000 a year to an OOS student with less than 32 ACT? That is way more than the presidential awards (about $22,000/year) for an in-state.

There are so many qualified in state kids (see the accepted thread) who need these aids. Why spend so much for OOS kids?

The National Buckeye is intended to equalize the tuition cost for OOS students with the instate tuition by essentially returning the surcharge as a scholarship. It can be combined with any Maximus awards up the cost of attendance.

The Trustees scholarship cannot be combined with Maximus awards, if any.

Correct. I thought that would be understood since my original post stated my older son was awarded 26K over four years, but I probably should have restated it.

AH - I figured that was what you meant, but it from his post it sounded like DadII might have misunderstood and thought those were annual awards. No such luck.
