Are they Really the Best?

Hi everyone. So I go to a great public school. It was recently ranked in the top 150 schools in the country. However, on this list there were no boarding schools. But there were private day schools. Is this because prep schools don't show up on these lists because it is a known fact that they are the best, or are the simply not good enough?

Any comments would be great.

Thanks

If andover and exeter aren’t in the top 150, i’d be shocked  i think they just didn’t count BSes.

anyways there are tons of “top 150” lists, could you tell us which one you’re referring to? they must mention their methodology somewhere and maybe if they included BSes or not

Here’s the Link:

[America’s Best High Schools: Gold Medal List - US News and World Report](http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/high-schools/2009/12/09/americas-best-high-schools-gold-medal-list.html)

lol my school is on the silver list and they put up a banner ‘ranked as one of the top schools in the country’ X’D I rofl’ed so hard at this! they are NO WHERE NEAR that good! If that’s the best this country has to offer I’ll go suicidal (jk)

There you go.

“We looked at more than 21,000 public high schools in 48 states and the District of Columbia.”

… boarding schools aren’t public

edit: oops, bamagirl beat me to the chase :(

There were some private day schools on here too.
A does anyone know of any lists that include boarding schools as well?

Any other comments would be great.

Are you talking about Newsweek? If so - Newsweek looks at percentage of students who sit for the IB and AP exams.

USNews looks at additional factors such as performance on state exams.

Those factors don’t mesh with the way boarding schools work.

Also - even if they could, not likely Boarding schools would release their stats for it.

So the list is great if you’re trying to compare public schools - or local private schools - but it’s not meant to rank or evaluate boarding schools which are in a class all their own.

What schools do you see on there that are private day schools? Don’t forget, just because a school has “Academy” in its’ name doesn’t mean it’s private. It could just be a charter/magnet/other school.

I went to one of the schools on that list. Granted, it was eons ago, but at the time it was rated #1 in our state. I also went to NMH and CSW ( Cambridge School of Weston ) and I can tell you the #1 public school in our state then, same as on that list now, PALED in comparison. Doubt times have changed that much. Mind you, there were a few good teachers, well, actually, one. I just forgot, the other one got fired.

sadie2, so your saying that the prep school was significantly better?
