Actually , whether it’s easy or not, whether it’s reported or not, you spend time on it so yes it should be mentioned .
@MYOS1634 but they’re illegal… And not all admission officers are so understanding. Also, I don’t have any proof that I did them. In theory, I should mention everything, but maybe it would be wiser not to mention them.
Anyway, thanks everyone for your responses!
It’s on the honor system. If you lie and are caught, at any point, your admission is rescinded; if you are already enrolled, you’re kicked out. They won’t ask for proof because the consequences of lying are great and ARE enforced.
When you say “illegal”, do you mean “runner boy for a drug lord” or “unreported to taxes by employer”? Because if the former well, err, yes that’s a problem, if the latter, what your employer does or doesn’t do isn’t related to you. Babysitters also don’t declare their handful of dollars to the IRS.
The jobs I did are trivial (babysitting, tutoring etc.); they’re illegal because they’re not reported. Yes, I know the consequences of lying - that’s one of the reasons for my obsession with accuracy when it comes to hours spend for ecs. Anyway, I thought I have to report my income too. I don’t really know how these things work.
Weird, don’t worry. Many American teenagers do these kinds of jobs without declaring the income on taxes: lots of young people babysit, do garden work, etc. These are temporary, occasional “odd jobs.” No one will judge you and you can mention them if you want - especially the tutoring. That may be of interest to admissions committees since it shows that you’re good enough in a subject to teach it, and that you’re good enough to be paid for the work.
MYOS, katliamom, thanks. I guess I’m going to report them then.
Individuals who earn less than the personal exemption (currently $6,200) are not required to pay income tax or file a tax return. So unreported occasional “odd jobs” are perfectly legal.
Make sure that your application is consistent. If you list a job among your ECs, your financial aid application needs to list the income from that job as well.
Harward university is different then Howard I guess… Should I consider both give similar help to international student admitted?
^^^ ???
It’s HarVard, not Harward.
Anyway, OP, what major are you considering?
Harvard is perhaps the hardest university in the world to get into. Are you among the very best students in your country? How do you compare to them in terms of your academic accomplishments? Do you have any national or international awards? Are you a world class athlete? Is your dad or mom a multi-millionaire, king/queen or head of state or maybe even just a top diplomat?
If the answers to one or more of these questions is “no” you can still go ahead and apply to Harvard. Just know your odds of getting in are very, very slight.
I’m quite sure Harvard offers more financial aid @DrAshishkayastha, but you must be extraordinary to get in.
I didn’t made up my mind about the major yet Paul.
@b@r!um thanks, I’ll do that.
Thanks for correcting me paul, @WeirdUserName : MYOS1634 has mentioned that Howard can give full ride. Ketliamom mentioned Harvard. But have to be exceptionally well for both.
Actually for howard, its easier.
You just need test score and GPA, and its guaramteed too
