Are UF "Chance Me's" worth it?

I think chance me's for UF are useless. UF does have the most holistic admissions routine for a mid-high ranking public school.

I think there is some limit where you need to have a GPA or test scores or EC's above it to have any chance. From there, it becomes a lottery where some lower-level applicants even get accepted over higher-level applications.

I think I was a lower-than-average applicant. I had just 2 AP's and Baseball EC at some random, unrecognized high school, and I got in. Whereas someone I knew really did all he could to get into UF, 9 AP's, SAT's in the 2000's (seriously how can you get this high?), and some strong EC's, and ultimately he did not get in. Last I heard from him was he was in UCF but at least he's liking it there.

My point: Sadly for a school where many qualified (and over-qualified) applicants who really would like a seat have to go through some raffle.

I think this applies to most chance me's I come by on these forums. Last year I've seen the decisions thread and noticed the same: students with MUCH better stats than me getting rejected while other averagers like me did get in.

This is my take and I can certainly support this via experience on these forums. What do you guys and gals think?

Not really. Its just a bunch of people guessing. None of us are qualified. LOL.

Chance me threads are a way for worried/stressed students to let off some steam, and to see if they fit the standard profile. Holistic admissions does add a not insignificant unknown factor to admissions, but as long as everyone is aware you’re getting info/advise from the “internet” it can’t hurt and it may even help in setting expectations (and with UF, that’s usually, “Make sure you have a few safeties lined up!”).

Decision threads can give some anecdotal evidence, but they are hardly the “average” results. Last years thread had, what 20 or 30 results (and a lot of discussion around just a few of the results)? out of 27,000 applicants and over 12,000 accepted students. Don’t use these threads to overstate the precarious of UF’s process. It isn’t that bad, as can be seen in the common data set. The vast majority of admitted students have very solid GPA/Test Scores and are in the top 10% of their class. Having a few students with lesser stats doesn’t change this fact.

They’re not useless but people take them way too seriously on this site… The amount of redundant and completely false information on here is incredible.

People have their own ideas about “holistic admissions” and to be honest, nobody here has any damn clue what exactly that means or what it entails. It’s whatever you think it could be.

That being said, people who have been on this site for a while can do their best job to give you critiques based on UF’s admissions statistics and weight of extracurriculars, based on their (rarely) best judgement.

My advice: don’t bother posting on here for a rate because you can just do some research on your own and find much of the same information…
