Is it better to do research through UROP or find independent Research instead? WHat kind of projects did u guys end up having?

I've heard that the Biomedical projects are the most difficult ones to get and some them require you to have a high GPA, good resume, and stuff like that before getting into them. Has anyone had any experience with Urop?

It depends what field of research you want to get into. One of my roommates whose interested in the medical field did a really interesting and relevant urop project, however my other roommate who was interested in business was given some ******** project that really was just a waste of time. Engineering type projects are also kind of a waste of time I’ve heard too. But if you’re interested in medical then it may be worth a shot.

Are you in the MRC or just UROP? Because MRC gets the project book early and gets better choices. But yes, some of the projects are pretty easy, but you’ll get easy credits or get paid (if you have work study) $8.50 an hour. I chose to get paid, and it was enough money for me and I didn’t need to go find another job. I was in the MRC, and many of the students had awesome research projects and had their name published in research papers. For a freshman? That’s amazing. And UROP also looks great on your resume. Most of the sponsors are really chill and a lot of them will offer you positions in their lab for years to come that’s not under UROP/MRC, so it’s a great opportunity to find a research job for later on. A couple of my friends were offered jobs as returning students through work study, some through independent study. And another friend is being trained as a lab supervisor! So, yeah like people have said, it depends on the field, but if you have work study, you might just want to treat it like a job so you dont have to go look for another job.
