Are "W"s on your transcript as bad as they sound?

I'm an English major, hoping to transfer to UC Berkeley. I signed up for a Creative Writing class this semester, but things have gotten a little hectic and I'm considering dropping the class. The last day to drop a class without a getting a "W" was last week, but I didn't think about dropping until this week. I've been working every day, and am currently enrolled in six classes. I'm also trying to get two honors projects going for this semester. I'm starting to feel disoriented, and feel the need to drop this class, seeing that it gives me the most stress. This isn't a class that is required for transfer, nor is it a part of the IGETC. It's just an elective class I felt like taking. Would it be wise to drop it to save the grades for my other required classes? Or would it be suicide it would make me an English major who dropped out of a writing class?

Six courses, and two honors projects looks like a serious overload to me. Your instincts are absolutely correct. Ditch this class.

Don’t worry about how bad a W might look. For all UC Berkeley knows, you dropped that class one day too late for it to not appear on your transcript at all.

I had many, many, many Ws. They have no effect whatsoever. I got into Davis with a TAG. I am an older student who has been going to cc for almost 30 years on and off 9business, marriage, raising kids got in the way!). I had about 20 Ws total. They don’t matter. There is a limit of 14 in transferable classes but you are far away from that.

I had 5 W’s all within a span of 1 year (3 years total at CC). If you have a valid reason then you’re totally fine. UCD didn’t care. They just emphasized meeting pre-reqs for TAG.

None of the UCs care.
